After 24,000 Hours of Testing, These Are The 8 Best Adjustable Beds of 2024

We tested 10 adjustable beds at home to find the best options.

DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame

Better Homes & Gardens / Marcus Millan

If you find yourself getting up on the wrong side of the bed each morning, changing your sleep setup may be the answer. While you can always invest in new bedding, adjustable beds are another option certainly worth considering.

Adjustable beds are designed with multiple settings, so you can set tilt, lower, or elevate yourself to a comfortable position. Many also have massage settings, zero gravity options, and under-bed lighting.

“Outside of sleep, an adjustable base makes it more comfortable to lounge around. Whether you like to read in bed or watch TV, an adjustable bed makes it easy to sit up or recline and relax,” says Stephen Light, certified sleep science coach and CEO/Co-Owner of Nolah Technologies.

To find the best adjustable beds, we tried ten different options right at home. For two months, we spent 24,000 hours reviewing each style, keeping in mind ease of setup, comfort, performance, and design.

Key Terms to Know

  • Weight Limit: Weight limit refers to the recommended number of pounds the frame can safely hold. Each adjustable bed has their own capacity, though they tend to be over 500 pounds.
  • Split King: A split king mattress is when two twin xl mattress are pushed together and are the size of a king mattress. This mattress style allows two people to choose different comfort levels, which is ideal especially in the case of an adjustable bed.
What We Tested
  • Ease of Setup: If we received white glove delivery service, we described our experience and noted if we thought it was worth paying for. If we setup the bed ourselves, we noted how smooth the delivery process was, where the boxes were left, and how easy it was to assemble the bed.
  • Comfort: We compared this bed to ones we're used in the past to determine if it were more or less comfortable. We also kept in mind how easy it was to find a comfortable position and if we experienced any discomfort during testing.
  • Performance: Performance was based on how easy it was to adjust the bed to our preferred position, as well as if the controls were intuitive to use.
  • Design: We scored design on the look and feel of the bed, any special features, and how much space the bed takes up in our bedroom.
  • Value: After testing, value was based on if we thought the price of the bed was fair and if we'd be willing to pay that much based on our experience.

Why You Should Get It
  • The package included all the tools required to set up the bed.

Keep in Mind
  • The mattress needs a day to inflate after removing the box and wrapping.

Overall, the best adjustable bed is the Lucid L300 Mattress & Adjustable Base, which comes with an adjustable bed base and a memory foam mattress. We tested the split king set with two twin XL frames, but the collection is available in various standard mattress sizes as well.

The set arrived in two boxes, one containing two mattresses and one containing the frame. We noted that the bed frame box was particularly heavy, so you may need an extra set of hands for set up.

The mattress came specially shrink-wrapped and needed a whole day to inflate to size fully, so you’ll want to open it in a spot where you have room and won’t have to move them far.  Thankfully, all the tools required to build the bed are in the package, and we found the setup relatively straightforward.

Once set up, we noted that the bed is exceptionally comfortable. Thanks to the split setup, each side of the bed is fully adjustable, independent of the other. Both sides come with a remote, which is how you power the adjustments.

The remote features multiple settings, like head up, head down, foot up, and foot down. There’s also a flat button, which returns the bed to the straight, flat setting. We appreciated that there’s also a memory position button that you can set to your specific setting. During testing, we noted that the bed moves smoothly and is very quiet, so the movement won’t wake a sleeping partner.

Why You Should Get It
  • For the split king size, you can connect both sides of the mattress to work with one remote or separately with two remotes.

Keep in Mind
  • We felt that the included mattresses were pretty thin, so it may not work for all preferences.

The Linenspa Hybrid Medium-Firm Mattress and Adjustable Bed Base is one of the best adjustable beds we tried and it’s less expensive than other options as well. The bed is offered in five sizes and can be purchased as either just a frame or a set that includes a mattress.

We tested the bed set, which arrived in four big boxes. They were fairly heavy, so we noted that you may need some extra hands to unload them and assemble the bed. Once you move the boxes where they need to be, the setup is pretty straightforward, and all the tools you need to assemble the bedframe and power source are included.

With the split king size, we liked that you can connect both sides of the bed to either one power source and remote or two, depending on your preferences. If you choose two, keep in mind that you’ll need access to two outlets as well.

Overall, we loved the simplicity of this bed. We found the included mattress was quite thin, however, and ended up replacing the included mattress with our own, which worked perfectly.

The remote control features a few settings, like up and down for head, legs, and head and legs. There’s no memory button or light, but the bed has a hook on the headboard to provide a secure spot for your remote.

During testing, we noted that the bed moves smoothly, and the motor isn’t loud, comparing the sound to that of a white noise machine.

Why You Should Get It
  • White glove delivery and a 365-night trial are included in the cost.

Keep in Mind
  • Only the firmness is adjustable and the head and feet on this bed do not go up and down.

Although it’s an investment, the Saatva Solaire Adjustable Mattress is beneficial for partners who prefer different firmness levels. Just keep in mind that this pick is an adjustable mattress, so you’ll need to purchase a compatible frame separately.

When it comes to this pick, it’s worth noting that the head and feet do not move, so you’ll only be able to change the feel of the mattress. We tested this mattress with a partner and were appreciative of how comfortable and firm it was.

While there are 50 firmness levels, we didn’t notice a significant difference between the hardest and the softest levels. However, we still appreciated how simple it was to use.

Although it’s an investment, you’re getting a high-quality mattress made of multiple layers, including organic cotton, cooling layers, moisture barriers, and anti-microbial features. Plus, you’re also paying for exceptional customer service.

The bed has white glove delivery scheduled according to your timeline and is highly accurate. The white glove delivery includes a complete setup of the bed and instructions on how to use it, and they will take away your old mattress. The purchase includes a 365-night trial, excellent customer service, and a lifetime warranty for the first five years.

Why You Should Get It
  • The wireless remotes are intuitive and allow two custom settings.

Keep in Mind
  • We would have liked if the lights could be brightened and dimmed.

The Puffy Adjustable Base is an excellent option if you’re looking for an adjustable bed with that hard-to-find massage function. Available in all standard bed frame sizes, it’s important to note this is just the bed frame, so you’ll need to purchase a mattress separately.

The bed arrived in a big, heavy box. We found the box difficult to move around, but the setup was relatively straightforward once it was moved to the bedroom. All the tools you’ll need are included as well, and once it’s set up, the mattress fits right on top of the frame.

The frame offers adjustable leg and head height, as well as a zero gravity setting for added relief. There are three speed settings and two massage zones as well for added comfort. Even better, if you choose massage, but your partner doesn’t, they won’t feel a thing.

We liked that the wireless remote has a simple interface with clear buttons and appreciated the two programmable settings and flat setting that returns the base to the original position.

As a bonus, there are special features like USB charging ports and LED lights on the base. We wished the lights could be dimmed and brightened but did like them for middle-of-the-night bathroom trips.

Why You Should Get It
  • The bed frame has 8- and 3-inch legs and 2-inch extenders, so many height options exist.

Keep in Mind
  • You’ll need to purchase a mattress separately.

To create a truly custom bedtime experience, the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame is the best adjustable bed to consider. This frame comes with 8- and 3-inch legs plus 2-inch extenders, giving you four height options to choose from.

The bed frame arrived in one giant box that weighed over 140 pounds, so we needed an extra set of hands to move it. Luckily, the setup was straightforward thanks to instructions that were clear and easy to follow. Just keep in mind that a mattress is not included with this pick, so you’ll have to purchase one separately.

The wireless remote has multiple buttons, accessing settings including zero gravity, three massage modes with three intensities, and a programmable memory button. We liked that if you choose the split king size, you can use two independent remotes or synch with just one remote.

Why You Should Get It
  • This bed’s remote includes a child lock safety feature.

Keep in Mind
  • The bed is offered in a smaller size range than some other options.

This GhostBed Adjustable Base is the best adjustable bed if you prefer an option with lighting. Although it’s a bit of an investment in comparison to other options, we appreciated how easy it was to use.

The bed is only offered in twin xl, queen, and split king sizes, so keep in mind that it may not work for every space. We tried the split king size, which was delivered in two packages. Overall, we found the setup very straightforward.

Since the bed frame has three 3-inch high legs, you can choose from three height settings. Upon set up, you can also decide whether to use one or two remotes to control the bed, depending on if you have a partner.

The bedframe also boasts under-bed lighting around the whole frame, which was one of our favorite features. The remote controls the lights, which stay on with a 10-minute timer. The lights came in handy, especially when we went to bed later than our spouse and needed lighting to get to our side of the bed.

The remote's range of features sets this bed apart from others. A lay flat button, up and down buttons for both head and feet, zero gravity, anti-snore, reading, and watching TV settings are all preprogrammed. Plus, there are three modes with three intensity levels of massage functions. Each side of the bed also has two USB ports to charge your devices.

Why You Should Get It
  • The bed features under-bed lighting and a flashlight on the remote control.

Keep in Mind
  • At-home setup is $265.

The Sven & Son Split King Adjustable Bed Base includes both a base and a mattress and is the best adjustable bed if you prefer a zero-gravity setting. You’ll be able to choose between three different mattress options as well, adding additional comfort.

Although shipping is free, it’s worth noting that there’s an added $265 fee for an at-home setup. Based on our experience, however, this could be money well spent. The bed base and mattress were delivered in multiple and cumbersome boxes. They all had to be moved to the bedroom, a job that took three people. Luckily, the actual setup was pretty quick and easy.

This bed can be set to lift your head to 75 degrees and your feet up to 45 degrees. The remote has buttons, including the hard-to-find remote lock/unlock button, which we appreciate, especially if you’ve got young kids in the house.

Anti-snore, TV, and zero gravity positions are all options on this bed and are easy to set. During testing, we found the zero gravity particularly soothing. Plus, there are also two memory positions that you can set up with your two favorite positions.

This bed frame also has under-bed lighting and the remote has a flashlight button, which is sure to come in handy early in the morning and late at night.

Why You Should Get It
  • There’s under-bed lighting, as well as multiple settings.

Keep in Mind
  • We found the assembly instructions confusing, especially since it came with extra screws that weren’t needed.

During testing, we found that the Serta Motion Perfect Adjustable Base is the best adjustable bed for those who need a particularly quiet option. The bed is offered in five different sizes and has a 120-night trial, so you can try it out before committing.

In our experience, the white glove delivery service delivered the bed but didn’t set it up. We found the bed setup a bit difficult as the instructions provided with the bed frame were confusing and there were additional screws included that we didn’t need.

Once set up, the bed is easy to use. The primary remote is intuitive and comes with zero gravity, anti-snore, and flat presets. There is also the option to create two custom settings and move the head and feet as you want. Plus, we appreciated that there was lighting as well.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the best adjustable bed is the Lucid L300 Adjustable Bed Base + Mattress Combo since it’s comfortable and easy to set up. It also includes both the base and the mattress, which not all options do.

Our Testing Process

To find the best adjustable beds, we tested ten different options right at home. For two months, we spent 24,000 hours using the beds and evaluating them based on ease of setup, comfort, performance, and design.

To start, we unboxed our beds and assembled the beds based on the included instructions. We timed the process and also noted if we used the retailer’s delivery and assembly service as well. We then assessed the bed, keeping in mind any special features, what you use to adjust the bed, and how many adjustable positions there are.

After dressing the bed with bedding and setting it to our preferences, we started using them, keeping in mind if there were any changes in our sleep. Throughout testing, we kept in mind ease of use and overall comfort.

What to Know About Adjustable Beds Before Shopping

Frame Dimensions

Mattress sizes are standard dimensions, but bed frames aren’t. Always confirm the frame's dimensions and ensure it will fit in your space, especially when it’s both flat and in different adjusted positions.

Mattress Size

Not all adjustable beds come with a mattress, so you’ll want to be mindful of the mattress size the frame can accommodate. Luckily, most adjustable bed frames are offered in most standard mattress sizes.

Mattress Included

Some adjustable beds include just the frame, while others have a mattress. If you plan on using your current mattress on your new adjustable bed, ensure that the type of mattress will work with the frame. Some styles, like spring coil mattresses, will not work as well with an adjustable bed frame.

If you don't want to purchase a mattress separately, consider the Linenspa Hybrid Medium-Firm Mattress and Adjustable Bed Base. With this pick, you can choose either just the frame or a set that includes a mattress.

Although we found the mattress a bit thin and ended up replacing it with our own, note that it may suit your comfort level as everyone has different needs. Plus, it could also be a great option for a guest room in your home or another space that doesn't get used as often.

Weight Limit

The best adjustable beds will have a recommended weight capacity, which is noted for safety reasons. While the weight capacity for each bed differs, it's likely to be upwards of 500 pounds. Those who share a bed with a partner or even pets may want to consider options with a higher weight capacity.

On our list, the Sven & Son Split King Adjustable Bed Base has a 900-pound weight limit, the Lucid L300 Mattress & Adjustable Base has a 750-pound limit, and the Serta Motion Perfect Adjustable Base has an 850-pound capacity.

Additional Features

Some beds come with features, like massage settings and built-in lights. We particularly appreciated the options that had under-bed lighting during testing, as it made it easier to get in and out of bed, especially while sharing it with a partner.

If you prefer an option with advanced features, we recommend the Puffy Adjustable Base. The base offers three speed settings and two massage zones for prime relaxation. There are also USB charging ports and LED lights on the base.

The GhostBed Adjustable Base is another great option to consider if lighting is an important feature. The base includes a remote that allows you to control the built-in lighting, which is around the whole frame. They'll stay on thanks to a 10-minute timer, so you won't have to worry if you fall asleep with them on.

Other Adjustable Beds We Tested

Purple Ascent Adjustable Base

During testing, we found that the Purple Ascent Adjustable Base was quite comfortable. However, it’s more expensive than some other options and we found that some parts of assembly were fairly tricky.

Casper Adjustable Base Max

The Casper Adjustable Base Max was challenging to set up correctly during testing. The delivery took over a few weeks, and certain parts were broken. Once all the features and pieces were sorted and set up correctly, we liked the bed but wished there was an option for two remotes and separate functions.

Your Questions, Answered

What are the benefits of an adjustable bed?

Though there are many types of beds on the market, there are quite a few benefits to consider when considering an adjustable bed. For starters, being able to elevate yourself into different positions can be comfortable, like if you want to sit up to watch television or elevate your legs for relief. Elevating your head may also help relieve snoring.

“For sleep, adjustable base positions like zero gravity—a programmed setting on many adjustable bases—can support proper spinal alignment, lessen tension around joints, aid digestion, and improve circulation. Most adjustable beds also have an anti-snore setting that elevates the head over the chest, relieving snoring and sleep apnea symptoms,” says Light.

Adjustable beds with dual zones can offer customization and comfort for sleeping partners, allowing both people to get their best sleep possible, even if they prefer different mattress adjustments.

Can you use any mattress with an adjustable bed?

The mattress you use depends on the bed frame and the type of mattress. Light advises that most foam and latex mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases.

Many hybrid mattresses have individually-wrapped coils that make them flexible enough to use with an adjustable base. In general, traditional innerspring mattresses are not adjustable base compatible.

How much can you expect to spend on an adjustable bed?

The best adjustable beds are typically $1,000-$2,000, more or less. Since they’re a significant investment, be sure to keep in mind each brand’s return policy and sleep trial offerings, as well as any additional features the beds have and whether or not they also include a mattress.
