Bright Stone Phone Stand for Desk

Better Homes & Gardens

Whether they’re starting their first semester or heading into their senior year, college students tend to need a lot of stuff. There are the basics that we’re all familiar with—bed risers, plastic storage bins, bed sheets that will likely get washed much less than they should during the year.

But those don’t make the most exciting presents; in fact, the best gifts for college students shouldn’t be basic at all.

Instead, opt for useful-but-not-entirely-necessary tech gadgets, well-made travel essentials, unusual organizers, and dorm-friendly decor. These are the kinds of gifts college students in your life will be excited to receive, especially if they wouldn’t have purchased them for themselves.

We’ve narrowed down the best gifts for college students at a variety of price points that make great teen presents, graduation gifts, or Christmas gifts. You’ll find a catch-all tray/wireless charger, a weekender bag that folds into a small pouch, and a padded floor chair that reclines.

This sturdy phone stand is the best gift for college students who like to multitask. You can place a phone, small tablet, or handheld gaming system on the silicone, anti-scratch shelf for a completely hands-free experience.

It’s great for students who want to listen to music while studying or video chat at their desks, and it adjusts to angles up to 45 degrees for the perfect view. The base is heavy and won’t tip, and the support rod is made of sturdy aluminum. It comes in a few different colors and you can easily charge your phone while it's on the stand, too.

Amagic Glass LED Flameless Candles

Amagic Glass LED Flameless Candles

Amazon

If you’re shopping for someone who loves candles but is moving into a dorm where they’re likely not allowed, these beautiful flameless candles will be an unexpected surprise. These are battery-powered but have a realistic flickering effect that gives off a warm yellow light, and they come in beautiful silvery glass holders.

The set of three can all be controlled via the included remote control, and can even be set to turn on and off via a timer. The remote also allows the user to control the flame (either a flickering or a steady glow) and the level of brightness. To mimic the appearance of real candles, the candles themselves are made of ivory wax.

No matter which candle you choose, you’re sure to give a welcomed touch of home to the lucky recipient.

mDesign Bedside Storage Organizer

mDesign Bedside Storage Organizer

Amazon

This bedside organizer is made out of heavy cotton canvas and has a rust-resistant arm that easily slips underneath a mattress for a sturdy hold. It comes in a few colors like charcoal and light pink and has a number of large and roomy pockets that fit everything from a water bottle to a laptop or tablet, in addition to must-have items like glasses, a book, and phones.

Because some dorms are bunk bed style and most don’t have nightstands, it’s the best gift for a college student who is used to having all of their necessary items close by.

Even with all of the options available on the market, this Owala FreeSip bottle is definitely one of the best water bottles out there. First, it’s made out of stainless steel for insulation that will keep drinks cold for 24 hours. The 24-ounce size is cup-holder friendly, and it has a little handle on the top of the lid to make carrying much easier.

But the unique spout is the most interesting detail because it allows the user two ways to drink their beverage. A smaller hole lets you free-sip through a straw without tilting the bottle, and a larger hole makes it easy to chug. The bottle can be taken apart for cleaning and is dishwasher-safe. Plus it comes in some really fun colors, too.

Elviros Toiletry Bag for Men

Elviros Toiletry Bag for Men

There are multiple pockets, including a large one in the center that should fit most standard- or travel-sized lotions and creams, plus side compartments with elastic bands and mesh pockets to hold razors, combs, toothbrushes, and makeup brushes. There’s some foam padding inside as well, so glass bottles won’t break if you take this traveling.

This cool mist essential oil diffuser makes the best gift for college students who want to implement some self care during long study sessions. It delivers soothing essential oils into a 300 square foot area, and has a glowing ambient light for more soothing comfort.

You can set it to run either four hours, eight hours, or continuously, but it automatically shuts off when it’s almost out of water. It’s made for small spaces, too, thanks to its small size. Along with a set of essential oils, it’s the perfect gift for college students to keep them calm during midterms and finals.

This thoughtfully designed lap desk from LapGear is perfect for common room essay writing or studying on a couch. The dual bolster cushion is much more comfortable to place on your lap than an overheating laptop. It features a device ledge at the base to prevent the laptop from sliding down, a built-in mouse pad, and a small slot to prop a phone up.

It comes in finishes that make it look surprisingly high-end, from marble to espresso to oakwood.

Crosley Cruiser Deluxe Turntable

Crosley Cruiser Deluxe Turntable

This gorgeous deluxe turntable from Crosley is the best gift for college students who love listening to music on vinyl and on their phones. While this is a working record player, it also can connect via Bluetooth to a phone or tablet and play music from the speakers as well.

The extremely portable turntable (it only weighs a little bit over five pounds) comes in a few beautiful colorways, all made from wood and bound in a leatherette material. Vinyl records can play at three different speeds, and there’s also RCA and headphone jack outputs. The needle itself, with occasional cleaning, should last over 1,000 hours of use.

It can be used for books, pantry food, skincare, shoes, study supplies… you name it. It comes in four colors and the wheels make it easy to place it exactly where you need it.

Carhartt Canvas Id Holder

Carhartt Nylon Duck Water-Repellent Canvas Id Holder

There’s also a pen holder, a clear slot so they don’t have to remove their ID from the lanyard, and a reflective element to this sturdy, durable case.

Whether they’re traveling abroad, walking on campus alone, or leaving a late-night study session, this alarm is an easy way to ensure college students feel a bit safer. To use it, all they users have to do is pull the top pin of the alarm and it’ll trigger a loud siren that calls attention to others in the area. It’s offered in several colors and even has a keychain attached, so it’s easy to keep handy on a backpack or other bag.

This set comes with two sturdy drawer organizers that have eight removable compartments each—perfect for separating underwear, socks, t-shirts, camisoles, or bras.

There’s also a zippered underbed storage bin that’s great for storing winter coats, summer clothing, additional clutter, or blankets. The top of the under bed storage is made of clear plastic, which will allow you to see what’s inside without having to open it up.

Padded Laptop Sleeve

Calpak

A fun pattern can go a long way for college students—maybe they’ll actually remember to use this padded laptop case from Calpak, which comes in bright colors and eye-catching designs. The polyester exterior is water-resistant, and the inner lining is padded to protect laptops from getting bumped around inside luggage or a backpack.

Additionally, it’s zippered and features an outside zippered pocket to hold chargers, papers, or other laptop accessories. It also comes in two different sizes for a perfect fit.

Casper Backrest Pillow

Casper Backrest Pillow

Your college student’s bed (especially in a dorm) tends to serve as both a study spot and a place to relax, so consider this comfortable backrest pillow from Casper as an ergonomic accessory for both. The supportive inner foam allows for lumbar support, which forces better posture (and therefore, less back pain) while pulling an all-nighter.

However, it’s still soft and cozy enough to use for a quick nap on a couch or as a backrest to unwind and watch Netflix. The inner chamber is filled with a mix of polyurethane foam and polyester fiber fill, and the outer cover is removable and machine-washable.

Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Slipper

Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Slipper

Parachute

College students will love wearing these Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Slippers while they lounge and work on homework. They’re some of the best slippers we’ve tested for their breathable and comfortable feel. We like that these slippers are machine washable, so it’s easy to keep them in good condition. Plus, they’re offered in several colors and sizes, so it’s easy to find a pair that suits anyone’s taste.

Conair Reflections Rechargeable Tablet Mirror

Conair Reflections Rechargeable Tablet Mirror

Ulta

Without easy access to a private bathroom, whether they’re living in a dorm with a large communal restroom or an off-campus apartment with multiple roommates, having a handy, foldable lighted mirror will be so useful for t shaving or makeup application.

The rechargeable battery works up to four hours before needing more juice, and the sturdy cover also functions as a stand for the mirror that can be set both horizontally and vertically. Users can touch the mirror to adjust the lighting with three brightness settings, and it has a small 5x magnification mirror included that can be removed when needed. And it’ll take up practically no room in a dresser.

Courant Catch:3 Essentials Wireless Charging Tray

Courant Catch:3 Essentials Wireless Charging Tray

Pottery Barn

Wrapped in an elegant linen fabric, the Courant Catch 3 looks and feels like a luxury gift (which it is), but it’s actually quite functional, too. It doubles as a wireless phone charger, making it the best gift for college students —when you place the phone on the tray, it begins to charge immediately.

The tray also keeps must-have essentials for the day ready to go, like ID cards and house keys. It works on phones with a case up to 3 millimeters thick, has 3-Coil Qi-certified chargers, and comes with a USB cord and power adapter.

Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack

Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack

Nordstrom

Great for class and weekend trips home alike, a reliable backpack will always be one of the best gifts for college students. This one from Herschel has several quality features: a padded felt laptop sleeve inside, as well as a triple-lined interior that will offer durability from the elements.

The cushioned straps increase comfort, as does the mesh back, and there are zippered compartments on both the outside and the inside. It has a drawstring enclosure as well as magnet-backed straps with buckles to keep things secure, too.

It’s also friendlier for the environment; the backpack liner is made with recycled post-consumer water bottles. And, of course, it’s an on-trend style with patterned options like painted camo and solid colors like dusty rose and ivy green.

BHG Woven Chenille Throw

BHG Textured Cozy Woven Chenille Throw

Walmart

You really can’t give college students too many throw blankets, towels, and socks, but this chenille throw gets extra points for being as stylish as it is cozy. It’s made with lightweight yarn that will work as well in the warmer months as it does in the colder ones, and comes in neutral options like green and gray.

It’s machine-washable and features a stylish textured arch pattern that will fit right in with most decor styles. Best of all, it’s generously sized at 50 x 72 inches.

A must-have on every college student’s list is definitely a pair of noise-canceling headphones, allowing them to study without interruption in crowded libraries, study halls, and coffee shops. This Bose option is one of the best, with Bluetooth connectivity that allows them to be worn completely wireless and six external microphones to eliminate noises.

They’re water-resistant, with a range of up to 33 feet, and a built-in microphone to make and receive phone calls. The charge time is also excellent: one charge will last up to 22 hours on one charge, gain three hours of runtime on a quick 15-minute charge, and fully charge up in only three hours. The ear cups are made of synthetic leather and are soft and comfortable, too.

Starface Micro-Cloud Patches for Early Stage Spots

Starface Micro-Cloud Patches for Early Stage Spots

Amazon

Stress, junk food, and lack of sleep can all contribute to bouts of acne, and college students typically deal with all three. Luckily, these brilliant patches from skincare brand Starface are made to stop pimples from fully forming: when the user feels a big one coming, they place a cute cloud-shaped patch fitted with tiny micro darts over the blemish.

Themicro darts release a combo of salicylic acid, niacinamide, and hydrocolloid to calm inflammation and unclog the spot before it gets any bigger.

Wavelength Bath Sheet Bundle

Wavelength Bath Sheet Bundle

Brooklinen

This bundle from Brooklinen is a great find for a few reasons. Towels are always a great gift for college students who suddenly have less access to laundry, and these particular towels are some of the softest on the market. The bright colors will also make them easily recognizablem so they’re less likely to get lost or taken.

The set comes with two hand towels and two bath towels made from 100% Turkish Cotton. The discount you get when purchasing the bundle is one of the best reasons to snag these high-end, soft bath sheets.

One of the best gifts for college students is one that helps them find all of their pricey stuff when they think they’ve lost it—which is where this four-pack of Apple Air Tags comes in. It’s a Bluetooth 5.0 tag that connects to a phone or tablet and helps you find and track anything important.

They’re great to put in laptop bags, suitcases, wallets, purses, and more, so if your college student is inclined to leave things at friend’s houses, in libraries, or underneath a pile of clothes, this will be a huge game changer for them.

Nodpod Gentle Pressure Sleep Mask

Nodpod Gentle Pressure Sleep Mask

Amazon

This is a fantastic sleep mask for naps. The Nod Pod is filled with microbeads that put gentle pressure on the eyes, which the brand claims will start taking a relaxing effect in as little as three minutes. You can think of it like a weighted blanket for the face. It can be used for side sleeping and sleeping on the back, and it has slits on the ends to use while upright, which could be great during travel.

The microbeads allow for an even distribution of pressure and the mask has a soft outer layer that can be machine-washed.

S'well Tritan Eats 2-in-1 Nesting Food Bowls

S'well Tritan Eats 2-in-1 Nesting Food Bowls

Amazon

Food prep in a dorm can be almost impossible, but this compact set of 12-ounce glass bowls with covers can really help. They’re microwave-safe—perfect for storing leftovers in the mini fridge without taking up too much room—and keep food cold for 12 hours and hot for seven.

College students can also use them for overnight oats, chia pudding, yogurt parfaits, salads, and other dishes that only need a cutting board and a few ingredients to create. The leak-resistant pop-top lids also ensure that the food won’t spill in a bag or backpack while traveling to class. And that means you can fill them with food when they come to visit you, too.

This slim portable charger from Anker is another great gift to keep college kids connected to their phones and tablets without having to worry about them running out of battery. It charges a tablet once and a phone up to three times before it needs to be plugged in and recharged.

It comes with that micro-USB charger that juices the Anker PowerCore back up in only 4.5 hours, although the user needs to provide their own phone charger. It’s only slightly heavier than a baseball and is designed flat so it can easily fit into a pocket or laptop sleeve.

Bombas Men's Ankle Sock 12-Pack

Men's Ankle Sock 12-Pack

Bombas

Bombas are more expensive than your average socks, but they’re also not your average socks. To start, they have a cushioned footbed and a cushioned heel that provide comfort and prevent the chafing that can cause blisters.

They also have a seamless toe and arch support that provides some light compression. Between the comfort and the fact that with every pair of socks purchased, the brand donates another pair to help the unhoused community, they’re worth the cost. Bombas are made with a mix of Supima cotton and some elastane for stretch and are safe to machine-wash and tumble dry.

GEVO TIK Tok Bluetooth Remote Control

CeraVe Daily Skin Care Hydrating Bundle

CeraVe Daily Skin Care Hydrating Bundle

Amazon

The best gift for college students who are not even close to having a skincare regimen is this incredibly gentle hydrating bundle from CeraVe. It’s unscented, approved by the National Eczema Association, and is a generally safe bet for most skin types.

This useful set comes with three products: a hyaluronic acid-infused gentle daily cleanser, an SPF 30 moisturizer for daytime, and a thicker moisturizer for nighttime. It’s all a young person needs to start a decent skincare routine, and the products are oil-free, too. Put this in their dopp kit and they actually might remember to use it before they go to bed or to class.

This compact cold brew coffee maker from OXO can be used on the countertop or in the fridge to make around a week’s worth of cold brew (well, maybe less for a college kid) in only 12 hours. Simply add ground beans and water to the brewer and let it sit for up to a day.

When that’s done, let it drain on top of the included borosilicate glass carafe. The mesh stainless steel will prevent grounds from getting into the cup while creating the coffee concentrate. And that’s it: cold brew right in a dorm room. When not in use, the carafe and the brewer nest into each other to take up less space.

Although this looks a little like a high-tech hair straightener, it’s actually a steamer and iron in one. It doesn’t need an ironing board to work, and it finishes the job in about half the time as a traditional iron. You can use the Nori Press with or without steam, depending on what kind of fabric you want to smooth out.

It has six fabric-specific settings, an LED light to indicate whether it has reached a certain temperature or run out of water, and two aluminum plates to ensure both the front and the back of clothes are perfectly wrinkle-free. It’s also a small, lightweight solution at only 1.5 pounds and 14 inches in length. It even comes in a few different colors.

Shark UltraCyclone Pro Handheld Vacuum

Shark UltraCyclone Pro Cordless Handheld Vacuum

Amazon

You can’t expect floors so clean you can eat off them in a college dorm or off-campus housing, but you should be able to at least feel comfortable walking around in socks. Get them a convenient vacuum cleaner that has good suction power.

This Shark is amazing for spot cleaning a larger dorm with a common room area or as the sole vacuum in a smaller dorm. It’s lightweight and has a small, compact charging dock so you can simply keep it out, ready to go, and fully charged whenever cereal is spilled or the rug starts to look dirty.

A solid rain jacket can absolutely be one of the best gifts for college students who attend schools in a rainy climate, especially those who aren’t used to walking long distances across the quad to get to an early morning class.

This rain jacket also happens to be a stylish option from buzzy outdoor brand Cotopaxi. It’s made from recycled polyester and finished with a moisture-repellant fabric that helps water bead down the surface rather than sinking into the lining. It also has an adjustable hood, three zippered pockets, and a breathable fabric.

Teeo Laundry Bag

It folds down completely to store in a closet or underneath a bed. And it only weighs 10 pounds, so it’s easy to move around. The chair comes fully assembled and is available in four colors.

A Croc shower shoe is about as sturdy and durable as a flip flop can be, and these will likely be used well beyond the communal showers. They are made with flexible, lightweight foam that dries quickly and is cushioned and comfortable to wear. These do run a bit large, so plan accordingly and size down.

Secure treading on the bottom ensures they’re safe to get wet and would also be great for a quick walk to the corner store or a day at the beach. And if Croc charms are the gift recipient’s thing, these fit 12 of them.

Made with a blend of essential oils including chamomile, lime, and rosemary, this is meant to be sprayed on a pillow to help the user fall asleep. Named after the Vagus Nerve (the largest cranial nerve in the body that helps to regulate stress) its purpose is to provide a calming effect through aromatherapy.

This blender is another workaround to help a college student make meals in a dorm room—as long as those meals are smoothies, soups, sauces, salsas, or protein shakes. The aluminum, powder-coated Beast, one of the best personal blenders we tested in our lab, has stainless steel blades that either pulse manually or can be set for a one-minute timer.

It’s not just the sleek footprint that makes it a great find; the blender also adjusts blade speed and torque for a smoother blen, and monitors the liquid’s temperature to prevent the blades and the food from heating up. The 34-ounce container can be removed and topped with one of the included storage or drinking lids, which means users can either take it on the go or store it in the min- fridge for later use. Buy it in pebble gray, black, or white.

Quiet Mind The Original Weighted Pillow

Quiet Mind The Original Weighted Pillow

Quiet Mind

College can come with many transitions—moving away from home, new roommates, stressful exams—so the best gifts for college students are often gifts of comfort. Similar to a weighted blanket, the Original Weighted Pillow from Quiet Mind offers a bit of huggable heft that can help calm and relax, whether you're squeezing the pillow or just resting it in your lap.

It's available in three sizes—small (6 pounds), medium (9 pounds), and large (12 pounds)—and two colors: blue and green. The manufacturer recommends the small for users up to 140 pounds, medium for people 140–180 pounds, and large for those weighing over 180 pounds. We also love that the cover is removable and can be machine washed in case of spills.

Brandi Fuller, our associate editor, received a sample of this pillow, and she and her husband can't stop raving about it. "We are obsessed," Fuller says. "I also had some friends over who wouldn't stop fighting over who got to hold it."

Your Questions, Answered

What do college freshmen need?

Incoming college freshmen will likely receive a detailed list of must-haves for both their dorm rooms and their upcoming courses before starting their school year. Dorm rooms also tend to also have strict rules about what can and can not be used in them—things like hot pots, rice cookers, Instant Pots, air fryers, candles, candle warmers, and other plug-in appliances are typically risky gifts for college students who might not be allowed to use them while staying in student housing.

The included dorm room furniture also varies with each university or college; sometimes night stands, dressers, and desks are provided, but it’s hard to know unless you’re receiving the list yourself. Some come with mini fridges or microwaves, many do not. That being said, the safest gifts to give are the must-haves and essentials that most college students staying on campus (or off!) will need. This includes basics like sheets and towels, college-specific items like desk organizers and microwave cooking tools, and fun extras like throw pillows or cozy blankets to help them get acclimated to living on their own.
