When the new year begins and the revelry winds down, it’s time to put the festive decorations away until next winter. But without proper storage, you could doom yourself to a holiday horror show featuring tangled string lights, shattered baubles, and dusty stockings.

So, to ensure your ornaments and tinsel stay safe year round, we found the best holiday storage containers to make decorating even easier.

“It’s important to go ahead and invest up front in your storage,” says holiday decorator Antoinette Boston of AB’s Holiday Decor. “We invest a lot of money in our Christmas decorations, so we just wanna make sure that they kind of stand the test of time.”

We tested 16 holiday storage containers in our lab to narrow down our favorite picks, selected based on their design, durability, capacity, and value.

Why You Should Get It
  • It easily accommodates oddly-shaped ornaments thanks to adjustable dividers.

Keep in Mind
  • It’s flexible and not sturdy enough to stack other containers on top.

The Sattiyrch Plastic Christmas Ornament Storage Box retains its shape with well-fitting cardboard dividers, making it simple to add and remove ornaments. The dividers are easily adjustable to accommodate oddly-shaped decorations, which is a bonus.

Because the space within the container is large, it’s advisable to wrap your ornaments ahead of time for protection so they don’t get damaged by bumping up against each other when you’re moving boxes.

As a waterproof, plastic option, it can also protect its contents from moisture, dust and bugs—and there’s no risk of ripping or tearing it. Its sheer exterior makes for better visibility to help you see what’s inside.

The small, lightweight box is easy to lift overhead. However, it’s not sturdy enough to stack multiple storage containers on top of each other.

Why You Should Get It
  • It kept both standard and oddly-shaped ornaments safe after multiple drops during our lab tests.

Keep in Mind
  • It’s too large to fit on a shelf and won’t work for households with limited space.

The Balsam Hill Deluxe Rolling Ornament Chest is the best holiday storage on wheels for ornaments because of its extendable handle and wheels, which easily glide across the floor at full-capacity. It’s the optimal pick for homeowners who can’t lift heavy boxes.

In our tests, we found the chest to be a solid, high-quality choice after it kept over 150 ornaments–both standard-sized and oddly-shaped–safe, even after we dropped it repeatedly.

Although this piece serves primarily as an ornament organizer, its large front pocket can fit other accessories like string lights or a tree skirt.

With all of the space it offers, the chest is too large to fit on a shelf, and would take up a standalone corner in your home; it’s not a great storage solution for small spaces. It also counts as the priciest option on the list. However, we consider it “an investment you'll use year after year, and that justifies the price.”

Why You Should Get It
  • It uses magnets to keep its contents in place for extra security.

Keep in Mind
  • It only fits standard-sized ornaments.

The Santa's Bags 3-Drawer Christmas Ornament Storage Box uses weighted magnets to keep its contents secure, making it the best holiday storage for customers looking for an option with drawers.

It takes the inconvenience out of organization, with three drawers that can house 72 ornaments and a sturdy exterior made of a polyester canvas material. The box kept ornaments in place when dropped, although the lid shifted slightly.

The ornament organizer only fits standard-sized ornaments in its honeycomb-shaped compartments. Anything wider wouldn’t let the box close completely. With that in mind, it might not be the best option for those with a wide collection of funky DIY Christmas ornaments.

Why You Should Get It
  • It offers a generous capacity for the price, allowing you to store more than just gift supplies.

Keep in Mind
  • It lacks any thoughtful, built-in organization system.

The ProPik Christmas Storage Organizer serves as the best holiday storage container for the creative mind. It’s designed to fit gift wrap supplies, but we found ample room for so much more–string lights in one pocket, scissors and ribbons in another pocket, and heavily-wrapped ornaments in the bag itself–for an affordable price.

However, the inside of the bag isn’t made up of compartments, with only one zippered pocket on the lid. So, it’s missing a built-in organization system, which could help keep its contents from shifting. Still, the interior items weren't impacted by the drop test in our lab.

The bag also feels flimsy–but not low-quality–when empty, although it gains more structure as contents are added to it. It might not be the ideal choice for delicate holiday decorations such as glass ornaments.

The exterior front pockets are velcro, making it easy to add and remove items, but that could leave this organizer prone to pests or other damage.

Why You Should Get It
  • It protects wrapping paper from bending or creasing.

Keep in Mind
  • It cannot fit large gift bags.

The ZOBER Wrapping Paper Storage Container easily fit more than 20 gift wrap rolls during our tests, protecting wrapping paper from damage like bends and tears.

Transparent pockets on the container’s lid can hold scissors, ribbon, and gift bags, and a small velcro divider creates a separate compartment. Notably, large gift bags won’t fit.

The container’s buckles keep the wrapping paper from sliding in the container, holding everything in place during transport. It keeps its shape, even with no contents inside.

The container is sturdy, but light enough to lift by the handle. We did note that the zipper catches around the corners.

Why You Should Get It
  • It features many compartments for organization.

Keep in Mind
  • The container falls over if it’s too heavy, making its kickstand useless.

The West Elm Gift Wrap Craft Station features plenty of different compartments, so it’s the best holiday storage container for you if you’re looking for various organization options. It offers room for miscellaneous items.

The wheels and sturdy handles make transportation smooth, but its kickstand doesn’t work well. It falls over with too much weight. The container’s zipper also doesn’t span around it entirely, leaving a hole for pests to potentially enter.

String lights are also easily tangled if they’re not carefully placed in the station’s pockets. But we found this worth the price even if just for the sheer number of items you can store inside. Considering that wrapping paper rolls aren’t the most delicate, it’s a great option for volume.

Product Details: Dimensions: 14 x 42 x 10 inches | Type of Decoration: Gift wrap | Material: Polyester | Capacity: 14 wrapping paper rolls, 6 extra-large ribbon rolls | Waterproof: Not listed

Why You Should Get It
  • It includes four plastic wheels to efficiently wrap string lights.

Keep in Mind
  • This container is likely to spill its contents if dropped.

The ZOBER Christmas Light Storage is a straightforward purchase, with an easily-removable lid and four plastic wheels to efficiently wrap string lights. The wheels fall into aligned rows inside of the container, keeping the lights secure. It includes enough room to add other decorations.

However, unless the container is full, the items inside will shift. The lid also sits tight on the container, but it isn’t secured with zippers or any additional measures. If dropped upside down, the box would likely spill all of its contents.

Because it’s unsealable, pests, dust and moisture could potentially get into the container. Still, it fits an impressive amount of lights (up to about 1200 bulbs or 3 strands of 100 per wheel).

The Bottom Line

The Sattiyrch Plastic Christmas Ornament Storage Box stole the show as the best holiday storage container for ornaments, earning perfect scores during testing for its protection against the elements and its ability to fit decorations of all shapes and sizes.

Meanwhile, the ZOBER Wrapping Paper Storage Containers counted as the favorite for wrapping paper, with glowing reviews for its durability, capacity and value. The Balsam Hill Deluxe Rolling Ornament Chest is a top contender for ornament storage on wheels, moving deftly like a large piece of luggage.

Our Testing Process

Our testers compared 16 products to find you the best holiday storage options, following a methodology step by step. We made our evaluations based on four factors: design, durability, capacity, and value.

We placed the number of recommended items into each container, then judged if the space was cramped or a perfect fit. We tested all of the zippers, buttons and storage compartments.

Once closed, we carried and rolled the containers around the lab to determine their ease of transportation, comfort of their handles, and ability to remain closed.

We also lifted and removed the containers from shelves, then dropped them to the floor from knee height to see if their contents would suffer damage.

For string lights, we considered how they tangled upon removal from the containers.

What to Know About Holiday Storage Before Shopping

Dimensions and Decoration Type

Before shopping for your best holiday storage option, evaluate which dimensions would work best for your available space.

Myriad decoration types should be treated differently in storage to guarantee their optimal usage. For instance, Boston likes to keep the original boxes for fake Christmas trees “because they stack better” in storage. Others prefer to vacuum seal their trees in plastic to minimize space and effort.

Boston urges decorators to roll their ribbon before packing it up “because ribbon will crinkle, and it won’t look good that next season if they didn’t take that extra step.” For those who incorporate fake flowers into their holiday decorating themes, she advises that they store them stem-down in boxes, so “you don’t have to spend time fluffing out flowers; they’re already good to go.”

Material

Boston considers plastic the preferred material for the best holiday storage because it’s typically heavy-duty and inexpensive. Plastic containers are often stackable, too, which helps them to fit into various spaces around the house.

Another common material is polyester fabric, although the likelihood of it being waterproof is slimmer.

Capacity

When shopping for holiday storage containers, you’ll come across various shapes and sizes. For example, a small bin can measure at 5 gallons, or 20 quarts. Meanwhile, a large option can accommodate 27 gallons, or 108 quarts.

Consider which size would weigh an appropriate amount for transportation. Boston encourages purchasing your containers from the same store location to guarantee that they’re the same size–and, therefore, easier to stack.

Safety

When choosing the best holiday storage for you, consider waterproof and airtight options like plastic. They will keep moisture and humidity from seeping into your decorations, and will also prevent damage by pests.

To protect your decorations, use bubble wrap, plastic bags or newspapers as an additional layer of defense. Focus on restricting any unnecessary movement that could lead to breakage, and don’t squeeze your items into an overloaded container—or risk crushing your baubles.

Keep fire safety in mind when choosing the right location to house your decorations, avoiding areas near furnaces and water heaters.

Others We Tested

IRIS USA 60 Qt. 2 Pack Ornament Storage Box with Hinged Lid and Dividers

We liked how lightweight this option was. However, it fell short in its durability, with its lid opening unreliably and the ornaments inside shattering during the drop test. We were ultimately left with questions about how well it would travel.

We also found it difficult to fit oddly-shaped ornaments in the uniform compartments, with small baubles falling through cracks in the box.

The Holiday Aisle Tree Light Storage

This storage bag was easy to zip open and closed, with the capability to transport it with one hand if desired. However, the bag is missing side handles that would aid with transportation, and the sole top handle was considered too flimsy to accommodate a heavy load.

The container includes three plastic dividers to wrap string lights around, but the loose threads throughout the interior could cause issues. The biggest problem with this option is quality control.

Williams Sonoma Holiday Light Storage Box

The Williams Sonoma Holiday Light Storage Box didn’t make the list for best holiday storage because its lid fell often, leaving the container prone to damage. The potential for tangling lights is high, in spite of the box’s dividers and wraps for string lights.

The container can hold more contents than expected, although a tester called it “a waste of money” based on its quality.

Your Questions, Answered

What is the best way to store holiday decorations?

The key to storing holiday decorations is organization. Save yourself the stress of sifting through boxes of miscellaneous trimmings by taking the time to catalog them as you’re deconstructing this year’s theme.

Boston typically separates her decorations, placing standard ornaments in one bin and specialty items in another. She prefers plastic tubs for storage, and labels the lids with markers. She skips the tape because it can lose its adhesiveness and fall off. Transparent tubs offer the extra ease of letting the decorator see exactly what’s inside of them, she adds.

For storage specific to certain types of decor, we suggest one of our choices for best holiday storage containers. As you’re packing, household goods can be reused for added convenience, such as toilet paper rolls to wrap string lights and egg cartons to hold small ornaments.

How should you store large outdoor Christmas decorations?

Boston suggests drying off outdoor decorations like inflatables completely before placing them in storage “because that stuff can get moldy.”

Depending on the size of a particular piece of decor, it may either fit in a container or be better suited to stand on its own. To make room for bigger items, clear some extra space in an overlooked corner of your house—a closet, the attic or the basement, for example. Consider using a furniture cover to further protect them.

Installing shelves and racks can create alternative options for storage. A shed can also serve as a dedicated home for large outdoor Christmas decorations.

How can you store oddly-shaped ornaments?

One quick fix is to keep the original packaging of the oddly-shaped ornaments and stack them within a container. Another solution: First protect the trinkets by wrapping them up, then tuck them into recycled cake boxes or popcorn tins before depositing them in their designated containers.

But, “I usually just play Tetris with that stuff,” Boston admits.
