The Vicks 3-in-1 Sleepy Time Humidifier is part humidifier, part essential oil diffuser, and part nightlight. Although the small design and color-changing nightlight makes this a kid-friendly pick, we found this to be one of the best humidifiers for bedrooms for people of every age. 

In our tests, this humidifier quickly increased room humidity despite the smaller, 0.6-gallon capacity. Its small size—about 8 inches tall and wide—also made it easy to place on a nightstand or dresser. The tank was easy to set up right out of the box, and we thought the features like the nightlight and diffuser were fun and helpful. The diffuser works with standard essential oils or the Vicks VapoPads, perfect for some relief when you’re feeling under the weather.

On the low setting, we only saw a quarter of the tank’s capacity decrease over eight hours. But on high, the water depleted completely within the same time period. While this humidifier is pretty quiet, it wasn’t the quietest of those we tested. However, for people who prefer some white noise when sleeping, this could be a great choice.

This smaller tank needs to be cleaned about once per week to prevent any mold growth, but we also liked how easy it was to clean by soaking the tank in vinegar, then rinsing it until the vinegar scent was gone.

How It Tested Over Six Months

After testing the Vicks humidifier in our lab, we took it home to test in our child’s bedroom over the course of six months. The small size allowed us to fill the tank in the bathroom sink without any troubles, which we appreciated. We didn’t have any trouble cleaning the unit, and we were able to dry it completely to prevent mold before storing it during the summer months. We plan to keep the humidifier around for the drier winter months or when a family member gets a cold.

Instead of using disposable filters, this humidifier uses a removable oscillator, which can be washed with soap and water. The tank is stainless steel, which means it can be placed on the stovetop to boil with water for 99.9% sterilization. 

Using the device is just as easy as cleaning, and it comes with three timer options for overnight use. In just a few minutes of running the unit, we found a noticeable difference in the room’s humidity. The device was fairly quiet during testing, though we did notice a steady dripping noise that could be distracting to some sleepers.

Keep in mind, unlike most of the humidifiers we tested, you can’t visually see the water level from the outside of this unit. There isn’t an indicator light, either, so you’ll need to open the lid to see if the tank is empty.

How It Tested Over Six Months

We’re still impressed with the Carpod One after testing it in our bedroom for six months. When we caught a cold, we felt that the unit helped alleviate our dry throat. The tank lasted multiple nights without needing to be refilled, but its larger size made it a bit too powerful to keep directly next to the bed on our nightstand.

A humidifier that doubles as a diffuser is a great option for bedrooms, as you can add essential oils to create a relaxing scent blend to help you drift off to sleep. We found the Levoit LUH-D302-WUS Humidifier as the best humidifier for bedrooms with a diffuser feature.

In our tests, this humidifier used up only about 2 to 2.5 cups of water on the low setting, although we didn’t see or feel much change in humidity level at this setting. This device worked best on high. On the high setting, it used up only around 5 cups (and it holds about 16 cups) after running eight hours. In addition to being pretty water-efficient, we liked the unit’s top-fill design, making it easy to refill with more water and add essential oil drops.

The Levoit humidifier is also budget-friendly thanks to its more simple design. It doesn’t have add-ons like a timer or nightlight. But the lack of a nightlight or even a bright display light can be ideal for some sleepers who prefer complete darkness.

One thing to note is that this humidifier is a little bit more involved when it comes to cleaning. There are three pieces to remove, two rounds of soaking in vinegar, then a final rinse before reassembling.

How It Tested Over Six Months

While we tested many humidifiers that ran without distracting noises, the Crane Warm & Cool Mist Humidifier was one of the quietest. This is a larger humidifier than the others we ranked as the best humidifiers for bedrooms, but it barely makes a peep. We found that on low, the humidifier was nearly silent. On the highest setting, it sounded similar to the quiet bubbling of an aquarium.

This is one humidifier with all of the bells and whistles, including a diffuser, a timer, a nightlight, cool and warm mist options, a remote control, and a hygrometer to read the humidity levels in the room. This humidifier works best for a larger bedroom since it services rooms up to 500 square feet. If you keep it in a smaller bedroom, you may want to keep the setting turned down lower. Just keep an eye on the hygrometer for guidance.

While you can’t see the water level from the outside of this humidifier, it does include a red indicator light to notify you when it’s time to refill.

As for cleaning and maintenance, keep in mind that the Crane Warm & Cool Mist Humidifier has a ceramic ball filter that you should clean before using. The user manual recommends rinsing this device daily, plus a weekly vinegar soak. The ceramic ball filter also needs cleaning about every 30 uses.

The Homedics TotalComfort is simple, with just two cool mist settings. However, it’s not the most intuitive to use unless you review the manual, so don’t just toss the booklet to the side when you open the product box. For a cool mist, you’ll press the power button once; for high, press twice.
