When it comes to hosting an outdoor movie night, popcorn and blankets are essential, but so is the screen you’ll be using. Although one can simply project onto their garage door or other surface in their backyard, outdoor movie screens are helpful because they provide a flat surface and oftentimes enhance the visuals.

“Outdoor movie screens are designed to be more durable than an indoor screen, and they hold their shape much better than a plain white sheet,” says Carl Prouty, the technologist at Abt, a national retailer of electronics and appliances. “Plus, they allow you to get the best possible picture out of your projector.”

To develop this list of the best outdoor movie screens, we tested eight movie screens, including options that are inflatable, freestanding, and pull-down. During our testing, we considered setup time, disassembly time, design, ease of assembly, durability, screen quality, and overall value.

Best Overall

Why You Should Get It
  • The screen’s frame can be easily moved around when needed.

Keep in Mind
  • We wish the legs had a bit more support for added stability.

Overall, the best outdoor movie screen is this freestanding pick from Elite Screens. We were able to set up the screen relatively quickly in 25 minutes during our first use and in 20 minutes during our other two uses. The reason our first assembly took slightly longer was that the instructions were unclear when it came to the steps for installing the screen’s legs. It is important to note that setting up this outdoor movie screen is easier when done with two people because of its larger size.

When it came to testing the screen’s durability, we didn’t experience any disruptions when viewing. And had it been a windy day when testing, we could have used the screen’s rope and ground stakes for additional stability.

In terms of quality, we noticed many wrinkles on the screen (especially when using it the first time). Although the wrinkles were apparent, they didn’t take away from our viewing experience. The screen was a bright white color and it appeared to boost the brightness of the projected video, a noticeable upgrade compared to using our wall and garage door. Although we wish this outdoor movie screen had an additional piece connecting its legs or feet for additional stability, we did like that the screen’s frame could be moved around when needed.

Best Budget

Mdbebbron Projection Screen

Why You Should Get It
  • The screen successfully withstands a breeze, which is especially beneficial for nighttime viewings.

Keep in Mind
  • It requires adhesive hooks to assemble, which may make it difficult if you plan on using it on the go.

For an outdoor movie screen that won’t break the bank, this 120-inch foldable one is a solid choice. We were impressed with the screen’s quick setup thanks to its simple instructions—it only took us 10 minutes during our first use and 3 minutes each time after. All we did was fix the included adhesive hooks to our shed door and put the screen’s grommets through them. We left the hooks up, so the only setup needed on subsequent uses was hanging the screen again.

As for the screen’s durability, there was slight rippling that occurred when there was a breeze that took place. Although the rippling was noticeable, it wasn’t distracting and the screen remained in place the entire time.

When it comes to the screen’s quality, we were pleasantly surprised by how we couldn’t see any of the ridges on our shed door through the screen—it essentially functioned as a clean white slate. We did notice that the screen had some small wrinkles in it, especially in the corner that wasn’t as rigid as the others. We also found that the movie’s picture was very clear and vibrant without appearing oversaturated, especially when looked at directly from the center.

Even with this outdoor screen’s lower price point, we experienced high-quality visuals and easy assembly. Since assembly requires adhesive hooks to hang the screen, it’s a better option for home movie nights and a less favorable one if you’re looking for an outdoor movie screen that can be taken on the go.

Best Pull-Down

Elite Screens Manual B Projection Screen

Amazon Elite Screens Manual B 120-Inch Manual Pull-Down Projector Screen

Amazon

Why You Should Get It
  • After initial setup, the screen can be pulled down in a matter of seconds for last-minute movie nights.

Keep in Mind
  • Since the outdoor movie screen involves screws to be installed, it may not be the best fit for people who don’t have a surface they’re okay with drilling holes into.

For a pull-down outdoor movie screen that will have you watching movies outside in a matter of minutes, we recommend this option from Elite Screens. Out of all the screens we tested, this pick required the least amount of time to assemble at about five minutes during our first use and one second for the other two. We liked that the screen came mostly assembled so all we had to do was place it where we wanted. It’s important to note that this screen requires screws, so it’s not portable and you’ll need to have a spot you’re able to drill holes into. We attached the movie screen to a wall, but it can also hang from the ceiling. The screen came with two screws, although we added four more of our own (for a total of six) to ensure it would be secure. We also needed two people to successfully set up this screen.

When it comes to the screen’s durability, we found it to be very stable, and we didn’t experience any issues with the screen flipping up due to wind. In addition to this outdoor movie screen’s solid stability, it offered a bright picture that was both focused and sharp. We didn’t notice any difference in the clarity of the imaging depending on where we were seated.

The convenience factor stood out to us in comparison to other screens. After the initial installation, all we had to do when we wanted to watch a movie was simply pull it down—no inflating or assembling each time.

Best Portable

Elite Screens Yard Master Plus

Why You Should Get It
  • The setup instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Keep in Mind
  • It needs to be completely disassembled after each use, which is time consuming.

Thanks to its storage bag, we were impressed with this freestanding outdoor movie screen’s ability to be transported to different locations. While it needed to be completely assembled and disassembled each time we used it, we appreciated that we were able to move it back and forth depending on where we placed the projector which we liked. However, when we wanted to adjust its height by moving the screen up and down, we had to remove the back screws, which was time consuming. The screen’s instructions were very clear and easy to follow, though, which was a bonus. The ground stakes that were included were very helpful in keeping the screen stable despite the breeze that came our way during testing.

We noticed some wrinkles each time we set up the movie screen, and while they were visible during the daytime, we weren't able to see them when viewing a movie at night. As for the screen’s picture, it was bright and didn’t appear to falter depending on where we watched. However, we didn’t notice too much of a difference in the picture quality when viewing on the screen versus against a wall.

We would’ve appreciated a way to fold up the stand to cut down on assembly and disassembly time, but if you don’t mind the extra labor, we think this is a great option for those looking for a portable outdoor movie screen for their outdoor movie theater.

Best Inflatable

Holiday Styling Giant Inflatable Projector Screen

Amazon Holiday Styling 19-Foot Giant Inflatable Outdoor Projector Screen

Amazon

Why You Should Get It
  • The frame is thick, and its heavy-duty fastener keeps the screen secured.

Keep in Mind
  • The depth is over 6 feet, so you’ll need a large viewing area to use this screen.

If you’re looking for an inflatable option, this pick from Holiday Styling is one of the best outdoor movie screens we tested. Setup was easy and took us between 10 to 15 minutes each time. All we had to do was tie the frame to the included fan before plugging it into an outlet and turning it on. Once the frame was inflated, we stuck the screen onto the frame with some touch fastener. Although the fan did produce a sound, it wasn’t too loud and didn’t cause any disruptions. The screen came with ground stakes for extra stability, but we didn’t need to use them as there wasn’t enough wind to warrant their use.

We noticed some wrinkles on the screen, but we think they could be avoided, depending on how careful you are when securing the screen. Regardless, the wrinkles we observed did not negatively affect our viewing experience provided by the screen. Compared to projecting on our walls, we noticed that the picture was significantly brighter when viewed on the movie screen.

Keep in mind, this is the largest outdoor movie screen on our list in both screen size and overall dimensions. You’ll need a significant amount of outdoor space to fit the screen comfortably, and that space will also need to have an electrical outlet. If you do have the space and prefer an inflatable option, this pick met our expectations.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Elite Screens Yard Master 2, Outdoor Indoor Freestanding Portable Projector Screen is the best outdoor movie screen because it can be easily moved around despite its rigidity and offers viewers an even viewing experience. However, the Mdbebbron 120-inch Projection Screen 16:9 Foldable Anti-Crease Portable Projector Movie Screen is the best outdoor movie screen for those looking for a budget-friendly option. This screen can easily be assembled, and we found it simple to move around for those at-home movie nights.

Our Testing Process

To find the best outdoor movie screens, we tested eight outdoor movie screens at our homes across the United States. We evaluated each outdoor movie screen based on factors including ease of assembly and setup time (as well as ease of disassembly and disassembly time), design, durability, screen quality/clarity, stability, and value.

We started our testing to find the best outdoor movie screens by timing how long it took for each movie screen to be assembled and ready for use from the moment we unpacked it. We made sure to record the time it took to set up any additional features such as ground stakes or tethering equipment into account when recording the total. If a movie screen’s instructions were particularly clear or vague, we took note of that as well and observed how the clarity or ambiguity of the instructions impacted the user experience depending on the type of screen being tested.

When it came to playing media, we set up and connected an outdoor projector to a media source and projected movies onto each screen at least three times. We also tested how well the visuals appeared on a lightly colored garage door or wall compared to the movie screen being tested.

During testing, we took note of the clarity of the outdoor movie screens (including any wrinkles) as well as any locations that may have offered better or the best viewing with regard to color saturation and brightness. We observed how well each movie screen endured and was able to stabilize itself when faced with outdoor elements including wind or rain. When testing inflatable screens, we listened to the volume of their fans and assessed whether or not they detracted from the viewing experience.

What to Know About Outdoor Movie Screens Before Shopping

Type

There are multiple types of outdoor movie screens, and the best kind for your needs depends on a variety of factors.

Pull-down screens require the most permanent assembly, typically securing the screen to a wall or ceiling with screws. This is the least portable option, but it’s the best for easy setup for later viewings—just pull the screen down.

Freestanding screens come with a stand and are a great option for portability, as you don’t need a wall, ceiling, or outlet to use them. However, they may require a bit more assembly and disassembly time.

In between freestanding screens and pull-down screens are foldable screens, like the Mdbebbron 120-inch Projection Screen, which require temporarily securing the fabric to a wall and removing after each use. While these are fairly portable, they don’t offer as much mobility as a freestanding screen.

Lastly, inflatable screens offer both a large screen and small storage. While you don’t need to secure inflatable screens to a wall or ceiling, you will need access to an electrical outlet to operate the fan, which typically runs the entire time you’re using the screen.

Screen Size

The best outdoor movie screens vary in size. It’s important to think about where you plan on using it and how much space you have so you know what size screen will best suit your needs. It’s also important to note that “your projector will need to be a certain distance away from the screen to project its maximum image,” Prouty says. You'll need to check your projector's manual to find its maximum projection size and throw ratio, which will determine how far your projector will need to be from the screen. Many home projectors have throw ratios of 2.0 and a recommended throw distance between 10 to 15 feet, but it's best to check the manual to make sure.

When it comes to the aspect ratio of the best outdoor movie screens, “It's best to go with a 16:9 aspect ratio as you can play just about any movie on it without sacrificing any significant portions of the picture,” Prouty explains.

Gain

When shopping for the best outdoor movie screens, you should keep an eye out for their gain when reviewing the product details. “Gain is an indicator of how much light from the projector is reflected back off the screen, so you want something to match up with your projector,” Prouty explains. A general rule of thumb is the brighter your projector, the less gain you need. “If you have a lower lumen projector (300–500), you want a screen with a gain closer to 1.0,” Prouty says. “If you have a projector that outputs a higher amount (2000–3000), you'll want something around 0.8.”

Material

The best outdoor movie screens are made from materials that are able to withstand some outdoor elements. “When shopping for an outdoor screen you should look for a durable cloth material,” says Prouty. “There isn't necessarily a ‘best’ material, you just want something that is easy to clean and can withstand some amount of light wind.”

When it comes to freestanding, pull-down, or foldable movie screens, the thickness of the fabric is important for projecting a clear, bright picture. This is because extra light filtering through the back of the fabric, say from an outdoor floodlight, will dull the projected image. Some fabrics, like the CineWhite UHD-B, have a black backing similar to blackout curtains to prevent light from shining through. If a projector screen is made of polyester, you'll want to pay attention to its denier, which is a unit of measurement describing the thickness and weight of the fibers. The larger the number, the thicker the fabric. Thick fabrics can also help keep the movie screen stable during light winds and prevent wrinkling.

Other Outdoor Movie Screens We Tested

Insignia Outdoor Projector Screen

The Insignia Outdoor Projector Screen offered us a waterproof and inflatable movie screen, which was convenient. However, we found it challenging to flatten out the screen to remove wrinkles and disliked how flimsy the lightweight material felt.

VivoHome 17 Feet Indoor and Outdoor Inflatable Mega Movie Screen

The VivoHome 17 Feet Indoor and Outdoor Inflatable Mega Movie Screen offered us an easy assembly experience, which we appreciated. However, we disliked how loud the fan was (especially when the screen was situated close to the projector). We had to turn the movie’s volume up to try to block it out. Its stakes were also not as stable as we would have liked.

XHYCPY Inflatable Outdoor Projector Screen

The XHYCPY Inflatable Outdoor Projector Screen exceeded our expectations when it came to its picture quality as it displayed vibrant and saturated images. We liked that this screen made us feel as though we were at a drive-in movie. However, we couldn’t get rid of its deep wrinkles, which did end up taking away from our overall viewing experience.

Your Questions, Answered

What is the best type of screen for outdoor use?

According to Kurt Kath, Best Buy home expert, the type of screen you purchase for outdoor use will vary depending on what you plan on using it for. “The optimum size screen is really based on your intended use and what type of viewing experience you’re looking to create with your outdoor space.”

However, outdoor screens with a matte finish are best for outdoor use. “It's best to look for a screen with a matte finish, especially if you plan on using it during the daytime when glare could be an issue,” Prouty says. “You'll also want to make sure the material is easy to clean and durable, as an outdoor screen will be exposed to more wind and dust outside than it will be in your home.”

Can you pair an outdoor movie screen with any projector?

According to Prouty, “essentially any projector can work with an outdoor movie screen.” There are a couple of factors you’ll want to keep in mind when shopping for the best outdoor movie screens for your needs, such as portability. If your projector needs to stay connected to a specific outlet, you may want a screen that’s easily portable to place exactly where you need it.

What size outdoor movie screen should I buy?

When shopping for an outdoor movie screen, consider the throw size of your projector. “Some projectors are limited to the max size they can display, so consider the throw ratio while you’re shopping,” Kath explains. “A throw ratio is a calculation that tells you how far back the projector should be based on your screen size to create the best quality picture.”

Furthermore, “The size of the screen should match up with your projector,” Prouty says. “If your projector can produce a 120-inch image, you should consider getting a 120-inch screen to take full advantage.” However, keep in mind that a larger image means reduced brightness. “The benefit of buying a larger screen is that you can always make the projected image smaller to increase the brightness when needed,” Prouty adds.
