Our Testing Process To find the best outdoor movie screens, we tested eight outdoor movie screens at our homes across the United States. We evaluated each outdoor movie screen based on factors including ease of assembly and setup time (as well as ease of disassembly and disassembly time), design, durability, screen quality/clarity, stability, and value. We started our testing to find the best outdoor movie screens by timing how long it took for each movie screen to be assembled and ready for use from the moment we unpacked it. Pull-down screens require the most permanent assembly, typically securing the screen to a wall or ceiling with screws. This is the least portable option, but it’s the best for easy setup for later viewings—just pull the screen down. Freestanding screens come with a stand and are a great option for portability, as you don’t need a wall, ceiling, or outlet to use them. However, they may require a bit more assembly and disassembly time. This is because extra light filtering through the back of the fabric, say from an outdoor floodlight, will dull the projected image.
