Whether you’re looking for something cozy to wear while lounging around the house or a comfortable and practical post-shower garment, robes are a great choice.

Since there are so many options to choose from, Sheila Kennedy from the Textile Institute recommends looking for styles you are comfortable with. “Spend wisely, look for the best quality you can afford, and consider longevity,” she says. “Ask yourself if the color and style will endure for you, and if it is well made from quality materials.”

To come up with this list, we tested 38 robes and evaluated features like quality, comfort, design, and fit. Here are the 10 best robes based on our research, tests, and expert insights.

Why You Should Get It
  • This Ugg robe is plush and warm, which makes it a great choice for lounging around the house.

Keep in Mind
  • The material is thick and fuzzy so it isn’t the best robe to wear right out of the shower.

The best robe overall is the Ugg Women's Marlow Robe. It earned a spot at the top of our list for receiving perfect scores in quality, comfort, design, and fit. This super soft and cozy robe is perfect for lounging around the house, and it held up well after we wore it several times a week. It also maintained its look and feel after being washed and didn’t leave any lint or fuzz on our skin.

This fleece robe was very comfortable to wear on a daily basis, and didn’t cause any irritation. The plush material kept us warm; however, it may be too hot to wear on a warm summer day. This robe isn’t as stretchy as some of the others we tried, but we were still able to move around easily while wearing it.

The best robes come with convenient design features like a belt and pockets, and this one has a traditional belt and hidden side pockets. Regarding fit, we thought this robe fit true to size—the sleeves weren’t too baggy, and the bottom of the robe hit our lower calves.

There are a wide range of sizes and colors to choose from including bay blue, charcoal, and moonbeam. This robe is warm and cozy like a fleece blanket, but we don’t recommend wearing it right out of the shower due to the thick and fuzzy material.

Why You Should Get It
  • This budget-friendly robe is breathable and absorbent.

Keep in Mind
  • It’s thinner than some of the other robes we tested.

If you’re looking for an affordable robe that can be worn right out of the shower, while getting ready, or even at the pool, consider the Amazon Essentials Full-Length Plush Robe. It’s lightweight and soft with a waffle knit texture, and can be worn comfortably year round.

The cotton and polyester blend make this robe breathable and absorbent, which are both important qualities to look for when shopping for the best robe. It was easy to throw this robe on and off and move around with ease while wearing it due to the lightweight material. This robe was true to size with a slightly relaxed fit and hits just below the knees.

It comes in 15 different colors with decorative piping around the pockets, wrists, and front placket. We also appreciate the range of inclusive sizes that are available: XS to 7X. Convenient features include wide pockets and a wraparound adjustable belt with an inside tie to keep the robe in place.

Although this robe was thinner than some of the other robes we tried, it didn’t lack in quality. We didn’t notice any wrinkles or discoloration during the testing period, but are concerned it may wear a little over time based on the low cost. Overall, it’s a practical and comfortable robe at a great value, but it wasn’t as luxurious as some of the other robes we tested.

Why You Should Get It
  • This silky robe has elastic cuffs to keep the flowy material in place.

Keep in Mind
  • Despite having a belt and inner tie, the silky smooth material made it difficult to keep this robe closed.

For those who want to splurge on a truly luxurious robe, the Lunya Washable Silk Robe blew us away during our testing. This high-end robe is made out of 100% washable mulberry silk, and we found it to be soft and comfortable with a relaxed and flowy fit.

The silky thin material makes this robe a practical choice for any season. One of our favorite details about this robe is that the sleeves have elastic cuffs which help keep the billowy material from covering your hands.

This robe comes with a removable belt and inner ties; however, the silk is so smooth that we found it had trouble staying closed. There are also pockets in this robe, but since the robe is so lightweight, they are best for storing light items. During testing, we noticed the robe got weighed down on one side when we put our phone in the pocket.

Due to the silk material, this robe isn’t recommended for drying off your skin after a shower; however, it’s a great choice for lounging around the house. During our testing, we loved that the robe felt so light and flowy that we barely noticed we had it on. The robe held up well during testing, but we did notice a few wrinkles after washing it.

Finding a quality silk robe that you can wash is challenging, but we highly recommend the Lunya Washable Silk Robe as long as you don’t mind splurging. We just wish it came with a thicker and sturdier tie to keep the robe closed.

Product Details: Material: 100% washable mulberry silk | Sizes Offered: XS/S to 1X | Length: Thigh/knee | Care Instructions: Machine wash cold or hand wash (mesh laundry bag recommended)

Why You Should Get It
  • This soft and silky robe helps regulate your body temperature which makes it a good option for any season.

Keep in Mind
  • The sleeves were a little too long and the material wasn’t easy to roll.

The Skims Soft Lounge Robe can be worn comfortably year round. This soft, silky, and stretchy robe is made out of modal and spandex, which gives it a ribbed texture and added weight without feeling too thick.

During testing, we loved throwing this robe on after taking a shower and drying off. We didn’t see any color fading, wrinkles, or pilled fabric in this robe, even after washing it—which is a testament to the quality.

This robe kept us feeling comfortable without overheating, which makes it a good option no matter what time of year it is. We recommend layering it over your pajamas during the winter for added warmth and a cozy feel.

Although there isn’t an extra tie inside this robe, it stayed closed when we wore it. Similar to most of the robes on our list, this one also has side pockets.

It had a slightly loose fit and the hem fell just above our knees; however, the sleeves were a bit long and the material doesn’t make it easy to roll the sleeves. The package arrived dented but luckily there was no damage to the robe.

It comes in three classic shades (marble, heather grey, and onyx) and one limited edition honeydew color. There’s also a built-in loop for convenient hanging.

Product Details: Material: 91% modal, 9% spandex | Sizes Offered: XXS to 4X | Length: Thigh/knee | Care Instructions: Machine wash cold; dry flat

Why You Should Get It
  • This lightweight and breathable waffle robe gets softer with each wash.

Keep in Mind
  • We wish it came with a tie on the inside of the robe to help keep it closed.

The Coyuchi Unisex Organic Waffle Robe impressed us during testing because it was soft and absorbent. We put it on after getting out of the shower and were impressed that the lightweight robe absorbed the water right away.

This robe felt softer after we washed it; however, it isn’t as soft as a plush polyester robe. It was comfortable to wear with or without clothes underneath, and kept us at an ideal temperature without overheating.

This bright white robe didn’t fade or shed during testing. We also didn’t see any wrinkles, even after we let it sit in the dryer for a few days. This robe fit well and had enough fabric to cover our legs while sitting down. It also comes with big pockets for storing items like your phone.

We didn’t feel constricted while wearing this robe due to the slightly loose fit and breathable fabric. The double belt-loops and tie kept this robe closed, but an extra tie on the inside would be a welcome improvement in case the belt comes untied.

Overall, we loved the look and feel of this lightweight bright white waffle robe. It was easy to throw on after the shower, and was much more absorbent than the plush robes we tested.

Why You Should Get It
  • This organic cotton robe is light and airy, and we could easily move around while wearing it.

Keep in Mind
  • The robe collected lint and pet hair after being washed.

If you’re looking for a lightweight yet warm robe, the Cuyana Organic Pima Robe is our top choice. It’s made out of organic cotton, but we found that it felt similar to silk. The material is stretchy and absorbent, but we wouldn’t recommend wearing this robe to dry off when you are soaking wet.

We wore this robe almost daily during our testing period and never felt too hot or cold while wearing it. Since it’s a shorter robe, we don’t recommend wearing it on a really cold winter day. This robe is well-made and maintained its quality post-wash; however, it did collect a lot of lint and pet hair which could be a downside if you have pets.

We liked the fit of this robe and it stayed in place well when tied. However, it doesn’t have any extra inner ties for added security. The sleeves are wide enough to wear this versatile robe as a cardigan. It has two oversized pockets, but the lightweight, stretchy material got weighed down if there was too much in them.

This stylish and comfortable robe comes in three colors: pearl gray, soft rose, and black. Our favorite part about this robe is the light and airy material that made it easy to move around freely while wearing it; however, we didn’t like that there was visible lint and pet hair after washing it. It also doesn’t have as many size options as other robes on our list.

Why You Should Get It
  • This hotel robe has a luxurious feel and superb quality.

Keep in Mind
  • Since it’s made out of plush material designed to keep you warm and cozy, it may be uncomfortable to wear in the summer.

If you want to feel like you are lounging around in a five-star hotel, the Four Seasons Spa Bathrobe is the best robe for you. This hotel robe has a simple yet classic design and comes in a crisp white color with the Four Seasons logo embroidered on the chest.

Our favorite parts about this robe are the quality and comfort. Even after laying in it for hours and washing it several times, it still looked brand new. The microsuede exterior is super soft and didn’t wrinkle at all during our tests. The inside of the robe is made out of a plush microfiber terry that felt like we were being hugged by a cloud.

This unisex robe has a loose and comfortable fit, but the smallest size is medium, which may be too large on some people. The robe hem was right above our ankles and the sleeves were easy to roll up if needed. It stayed firmly closed with the provided tie waist, and the pockets were spacious enough to hold our phone and snacks.

We loved the super luxurious feel of this robe—which is to be expected from Four Seasons. Our only complaints are that the robe didn’t absorb water as well as some of the other more traditional terry robes we tried, and the material is so plush and cozy that this robe may be too hot to wear in the summer.

Why You Should Get It
  • It had a soft and comfortable feel, and it only weighs 2 pounds

Keep in Mind
  • It may be too thick to wear during warmer months.

The Plush Necessities Plush Signature Robe is the best plush robe we tested. This plush robe is super soft and comfortable, and the high-quality craftsmanship of the robe was apparent when we tested it.

We didn’t see any discoloration, wrinkles, or lint after washing it. We felt warm and cozy while wearing this robe and think it is a great option for a cold winter day, but it might be too hot to wear in the summer.

This robe comes with two ties, which kept it closed nicely while we wore it. Similar to most of the best robes on our list, this one also has two deep pockets for holding your phone or other small items.

We thought this robe fit comfortably, and like how it hugged our body without being too tight. Although we wore this robe after the shower, we dried off with a bath towel first since the plush material isn’t as absorbent as some of the other robes we tested.

The microfiber plush fleece was soft and warm, yet lightweight. Despite its plush thickness, this robe only weighs 2 pounds. It comes in six colors and has an oversized shawl collar for added comfort and style.

We also appreciate that Plush Necessities uses a high stitch count which leads to increased strength and durability at every seam. If you’re looking for a plush fleece robe to wear on a cold day, the Plush Necessities Plush Signature Robe is a winner.

Why You Should Get It
  • The relaxed fit and secure tie make this a functional postpartum robe.

Keep in Mind
  • It only comes in two colors.

The Storq Feel Good Delivery Robe is the best robe for postpartum, but it can also be worn comfortably while pregnant. It’s made out of sustainable modal and spandex material that is

Certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex. We found it to be soft, stretchy, and breathable with a high-quality design.

This robe fit well without being too tight or too baggy. We especially liked the wide sleeves that hit a few inches above our wrists, making it easier to change diapers without worrying about the sleeves getting in the way.

The stretchy material allowed us to move around freely while wearing this robe without feeling constricted. The detachable belt and extra long internal waist tie kept the robe securely closed. This robe also has pockets and a loop at the neck for convenient hanging.

We think this robe would be comfortable to wear during most seasons; however, it may not be warm enough to wear on a particularly cold winter day or night since the material is lightweight.

In addition to the quality and comfort, this robe is also durable—we didn’t see any pilling, shedding, or discoloration after washing and air drying it. Overall, we think this robe is a great value given the comfortable fit and functional design.

Product Details: Material: 94% modal, 6% spandex | Sizes Offered: XS/S to 3XL/4XL | Length: Mid-calf | Care Instructions: Machine or hand wash cold; lay flat to dry

  • This stylish robe features a shawl collar and spacious pockets.

Keep in Mind
  • It’s better suited for cold weather than year-round use.

If you’re looking for the best robe for men, consider the Ugg Men’s Robinson Robe. Featuring lightweight jersey on the outside and soft fleece on the inside, this versatile and stylish robe received perfect scores in all categories. We wore it while relaxing around the house, napping, and drying off after the shower.

This robe felt super soft and comfortable with a relaxed fit. Even though the material didn’t stretch, we didn’t feel constricted at all while wearing it.

The material felt heavy yet lightweight so we were able to wear it outside while getting the mail and while napping. Our only complaint is that we did get a little hot; however, we think this robe would be really cozy to wear on a cold winter day.

This high-quality robe maintained its look and feel post-wash without showing any wrinkles, lint, or shedding. Available in four colors and made out of cotton, this robe has a stylish shawl collar, spacious pockets to store your phone or remote, and a belt to keep it securely closed. Overall, we loved the style and cozy feel of this robe.

The Bottom Line

Based on our tests, we selected the Ugg Women's Marlow Robe as the best robe overall because of its exceptional quality, comfort, design, and fit. We especially loved the soft and cozy feel of this fleece robe.

Our Testing Process

We tested 38 robes over two weeks and considered features like material, available sizes, length, and care instructions to come up with this list of the best robes. We wore each robe at least five times during the testing period as we went about our daily routine and typical activities.

To evaluate the comfort, we lounged around the house in each robe. We also wore them after showering to test out the absorbency. Lastly, we washed each robe according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and recorded any flaws such as fading, discoloration, wrinkles, or shedding.

What to Know About Robes Before Shopping

Material

Material is essential when investing in the best robe for you. Robes are available in all sorts of fabrics, like polyester, fleece, cotton, silk, and more, but they are not all created equal. Some fabrics are better than others when it comes to things like affordability, breathability, and ease of care. Others determine longevity and resistance to abrasion, wear, and tear.

How often you use the robe and what you use it for will be determined by the material. Cotton, for example, breathes well and is longer lasting, whereas silk is better for more decadent tastes but may be incredibly high maintenance.

Other materials, like fleece and polyester, may not breathe as well as others, but they do a better job than silk and satin of keeping you warm, which may be a topic of consideration if you live in a climate with severe winters or are sensitive to the cold.

Length

An important, yet often overlooked, factor to consider when narrowing down your choices is the length of the robe. This decision ultimately comes down to preference. Robes are available in lengths from just above the knee down to the ankle.

The length also depends on the person wearing the robe, which can make gifting one a little trickier. Traditionally, a more feminine-fitting robe will hit mid-thigh to shin, whereas a more masculine fit will hit mid-calf or at the ankle. Inevitably, however, the decision is based entirely on individual preference.

Care Instructions

First and foremost, you should always follow the specific care instructions that come with your robe to keep them fluffy, absorbent, and in good condition. But there are a few general guidelines to follow.

Before use, cotton robes should be machine washed and tumble dried—but be careful to not overdry. Use mild laundry detergents to keep cotton fluffy, which will help maintain absorbency. Fabric softener and hot water should be avoided. It’s safe to trim any loops in the fabric.

Although silk can seem intimidating, it’s not as scary as it seems to wash. Hand washing is advised—even if the label says it’s machine washable—to maintain its luster and smooth texture. Avoid using bleach and drying in the sun. Think twice about using products with alcohol in them, like perfume and hairspray, when wearing the robe because alcohol can damage silk.

“Always read the care label attached to the garment for washing and ironing instructions,” Kennedy says. “Using fabric softener can create a water repellent effect on the fabric meaning it won't absorb moisture, but if that's not important to you and you like the feel of softener try to find one that is environmentally friendly.”

Other Robes We Tested

Avocado Organic French Terry Robe

The Avocado Organic French Terry Robe is made out of high-quality cotton that is both soft and cozy. We wore this robe after the shower and thought it did a great job at helping us dry off. We didn’t see any fading or discoloration after washing it, although there were a few wrinkles.

This robe wasn’t as stretchy as some of the others we tried, but we think it would be comfortable to wear year round. Overall, we really liked the soft feel of this robe. However, it didn’t fit as well as the best robes on our list. We ordered our usual size and the sleeves were too short so keep this in mind if you are on the taller side.

Brooklinen Super-Plush Robe

If comfort is at the top of your list, the Brooklinen Super-Plush Robe is a great option. It felt like we were being embraced in a warm hug while we wore it. This plush robe had a good weight to it without making us feel like we were going to overheat. Although it helped us dry off after the shower, the material did shed a bit the first time we wore it.

We also noticed a few loose threads after washing it. Another downside is that the robe seemed to shrink a bit after we put it in the dryer for a few cycles. Because of this, you may want to opt for a larger size than you normally wear.

Stars Above Women's Cozy Chenille Robe

The Stars Above Women's Cozy Chenille Robe is an affordable and comfortable robe. However, it didn’t feel as luxurious as some of the other more expensive robes we tested. This robe maintained its quality during our testing period, without showing any wrinkles, pilling, fading, or stretching.

Even though we used a towel to dry off before wearing this robe, it still helped absorb some of the water, which is an important quality to look for when shopping for the best robe. The main downside of this robe is that it got too warm at times due to the heavy weight and full length of the robe. The sleeves were also a little too long on us. However, it’s still a good option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly robe.

Your Questions, Answered

What type of robe is best to use after taking a shower?

Many of the robes we tested offer some level of absorbency, but ones made out of cotton terry cloth are the best robes to use after taking a shower because they are the most lightweight, absorbent, and quick-drying. Waffle knit is another good type because of its absorbency and texture.

When choosing the best robe for after the shower, consider options that feel similar to a bath towel. “Natural fibers [like cotton] are more comfortable after showering or bathing,” says Kennedy. “They will help to absorb any moisture left on your skin.”

We do not recommend wearing silk or fleece robes right out of the shower because they do not absorb water as well or dry as quickly.

To make your robe feel even cozier after a shower, place it in a towel warmer to heat up while you're showering.

How often should you wash your robe?

The experts we interviewed agree that washing your robe correctly depends on the type of material and its use. “Washing a robe really depends on the fabric, how often it’s worn, and what activities are done in the robe,” says Carlton Jones, a New York-based style and fashion director. “It’s most important to follow the care instructions of the robe.”

Kelly Helfman, a fashion business executive at Informa Markets, notes that it is encouraged at hotels and homes to reuse towels and robes to avoid excessive water consumption, so washing once a week is best.

“If you are in a terry cloth or cotton robe that is getting wet often, the last thing you want is for it to not fully dry day-to-day, creating a mildew-like stench,” she says. Washing your robe once a week will keep it fresh.

“To help the environment and your energy bills, wash at as low a temperature as possible, and wash only as often as you really need to,” Kennedy says.

Where should you hang your robe?

You should hang your robe in a location that is easily accessible so you always have it at arms’ length. Hang your robe in a dry area with plenty of air flow to avoid trapping moisture in the fabric. This is typically in a bedroom, dressing room, or bathroom at a safe distance from the shower or bath.
