Efficient and space-saving options for your home.

Stackable washer and dryer sets are a space-saving and convenient solution that will make doing the laundry a little less of a bore and a chore. Having them stacked together makes transferring loads from washer to dryer a breeze, and many of them also look super stylish, too.

Andrew Brown, appliance repair technician at This Fixed House, recommends carefully considering the various features the washer and dryer offer.

“These could include multiple cycles and temperature settings, load-sensing technology, and a moisture sensor for more efficient dryer performance,” he says. He also advises looking for models that are Energy Star-certified. “These appliances consume less energy, can save money on energy bills, and are environmentally friendly,” he says.

With this expert advice in mind, we scoured the market to find the best stackable washer/dryer sets for a variety of needs, and tested many of the popular and bestselling models available to buy, including compact and full-sized models, high-efficiency washer dryers, budget options, and even units with smart capabilities. In addition to Brown, we also consulted Brad Patel, owner of Mr. Appliance of Greater Little Rock.

What We Tested
  • Cleaning: We noted how well the washing machine could remove stains and odors, as well as if the unit had any useful cycles or features that help clean clothing quickly and efficiently.
  • Drying: During testing, we noted if the unit could dry a load in just one cycle. We also considered if the unit had any useful cycles or features that help dry clothing quickly and efficiently.
  • Design: Design was based on if the controls and lint trap were easy to access and use. We also considered if it was easy to load/unload our laundry.
  • Noise Level: We considered how much noise the machines made, as well as how much vibration there was while it was in use.
  • Efficiency: To test efficiency, we reviewed our water and energy bills and compared the amount to when we used washer and dryer machines.
  • Value: Value was based on if there’s anything we would change about the units, if we’d recommend them to family and friends, and if we thought the price was fair overall given our experience.

Key Terms to Know

  • Energy-Star Certified: The Energy Star certification ensures the product has met specific energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Kilowatts: The amount of energy a washer/dryer set uses is measured in kilowatts. The lower the number, the less energy the appliance uses.

Why You Should Get It
  • There’s a quick 36-minute cycle and it was easy to use.

Keep in Mind
  • There’s no indicator for emptying the lint trap on the dryer, and the washer’s spin cycle is a little noisy.

Overall, the best stackable washer dryer set is the LG WM4000HWA Front Load Washer and the LG DLEX4000W Electric Dryer. We found the set to be efficient, and we liked the large capacity and quick cycles.

During testing, we found all the settings on the washer to be useful, and there appeared to be a designated cycle/setting for every washing need.

Generally, both the washer and dryer did make noise, but it was not disruptive and we couldn’t hear them when we were in another room. However, we noted that when the washer’s spin cycle was coming to an end it seemed to get fairly loud.

Both machines sing a short tune when their cycles are over to alert you that it’s time to empty the clothes. We found this convenient and were not bothered by the sound.

Loading and unloading both machines was simple. The drums are easy to reach into. The washer cleaned our clothing efficiently, and the dryer worked equally well. We also appreciated that there are quick cycles for both. For example, if you’re in a rush, there’s a 36-minute cycle, and it takes even less time (26 minutes) if set to wash with cold water.

General maintenance of the machines was also effortless. Cleaning the lint trap was easy, but we noted there isn’t an alert to remind you to empty it, so we resorted to cleaning it after every drying session to be on the safe side.

Overall, both units are great quality, intuitive to use, effective at washing and drying in a very timely manner, and we also loved the capacity.

Why You Should Get It
  • It has easy-to-use buttons, customizable settings, and a helpful timer function for a delayed start.

Keep in Mind
  • Some cycles took a very long time.

Even those on a budget can create a useful and effective laundry station with the LG WM3400CW Washing Machine and the matching DLE3400W Electric Dryer. They’re both easy to operate with straightforward controls and helpful presets.

There’s a short wash function for quickly washing a handful of items, but we did notice that the regular wash cycles took quite a long time. Having said that, all clothes did all come out very clean and dry once the cycles were done.

The washer has an effective cold wash and a deep fill option to add extra water at any time, and the dryer has a sensor that detects moisture and automatically adjusts the cycle time accordingly. It also features specific indicators, so you'll know when it's time to clean the ducts and the lint filter out to ensure great drying every time.

We particularly liked the timer function, which meant we could set a time for the washer to start. We thought this feature could come in handy in various scenarios, like if you needed a certain outfit clean and dry before the work day.

The drums on both units are made from durable and smooth materials to keep clothes safe from snags. Plus, both the washer and dryer come with 10-year limited warranties for customer peace of mind.

Why You Should Get It
  • There’s one easy control panel in the middle to operate everything, and since it’s basically one unit, it has a seamless look.

Keep in Mind
  • It’s a combo unit, so it could be more expensive to repair than single units.

For an all-in-one laundry station, we recommend the LG WashTower Laundry Center. We found it easy to operate and super intuitive, and each load came out clean and dry. During testing, we never had to redo either a wash or dry cycle during the whole testing period, even on larger loads.

This washer-dryer combo has a speed wash option, which is perfect for those who need quick solutions. It even has sensors that can customize cycle settings according to the load you put in, making it quite user-friendly.

As opposed to a standard stackable washer and dryer set, the controls for this unit are all in the middle so you don’t have to reach too far to control the unit.

The unit also features five jets that powerfully spray clothes from different angles, ensuring the detergent gets right into the fibers of dirty laundry for an effective clean.

The tower plays music when the cycles are over, which we found pleasant. We recommend leaving the washer door open when not in use because we found the rim to be susceptible to mold build-up.

Why You Should Get It
  • Its large capacity, and an array of presets for every washing and drying need.

Keep in Mind
  • It might be a little too complicated for anyone not too tech savvy.

Both the LG WM4000HBA Smart Front Loading Washer and the matching LG DLEX4000B Dryer have several features that we thought made them one of the best stackable washer dryer sets. The machines are efficient, wash and dry excellently, and have a variety of preset options for every and any laundry need.

The washer has a TurboWash 360° setting that allows you to wash larger loads in less than 30 minutes. There’s also a 15-minute Speedwash Cycle, which is ideal if you need a specific piece of clothing cleaned quickly.

We liked that the dryer has built-in intelligence that will automatically set the correct drying cycle according to the clothes you put in. It also has specific technology to eliminate odors and wrinkles

If you prefer items with smart technology, you’ll appreciate that both units can be controlled and monitored by the ThinQ app on your smart device.

If we could change one thing, we would have liked it if we could customize our own settings on both washer and dryer. Instead, we had to navigate all the presets to find the most appropriate setting.

Why You Should Get It
  • Both machines are energy efficient and a good value.

Keep in Mind
  • We found this set (particularly the dryer) noisier than some other options.

The Electrolux Smartboost Front Load Washer and matching Stackable Steam Cycle Electric Dryer are a stylish duo that would make a great addition to any laundry room. Though the set includes so many settings that we didn’t get to try all of them, we were impressed with the ones we tested.

During testing, we particularly appreciated that the settings are self-explanatory. Anything we had questions about was easily found in the user manual, making it a helpful tool to hold onto after installation.

When it comes to the washer’s presets, we appreciated that the temperature, soil level, and spin speed were easy to determine by glancing at the instrument panel.

You simply twist the knobs to select the main washer/dryer settings and then press buttons to adjust temperature, drying level, spin speeds, etc. The selected settings have a small red light by them so you can easily tell what you've chosen.

The washing machine also has an oversuds protection feature that will automatically add additional rinses to the cycle until the suds are taken care of, although we didn’t have any oversudsing situations.

The dryer auto senses the dampness of clothes and sets itself accordingly. We were pleasantly surprised to find that even chunkier items like blankets and towels came out completely dry without us having to manually add any extra time to the setting.

Why You Should Get It
  • In addition to being quiet, the presets are straightforward and easy to use.

Keep in Mind
  • We thought the vibration technology could be better.

If low-noise is an important buying factor when it comes to choosing the best stackable washer dryer set, go for the LG WM4200HWA Washer and the compatible LG DLGX4201W Gas Dryer. During testing, we were impressed with how quiet these machines were.

These high-efficiency machines proved very easy to load and unload, as well as to operate, and we managed to figure out the presets pretty quickly. There are musical tones that play when each cycle is done, and there’s even an app that you can operate and monitor your machines with.

It was simple to download the app and sync it with the washer and dryer, and you can even operate them via an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The washer and dryer both have presets for bedding, delicates, sportswear, and towels, and there are even anti-bacterial, allergen, and sanitary options.

The dryer features steam sanitary, and perm press cycles, and it also has auto-sensing technology that will finish the cycle when the clothes are dry instead of just ending the cycle once the set time has elapsed.

The 5-cubic-foot capacity washer provides ample space for larger loads, and makes blanket and comforter washing a breeze. The vibration technology on these machines, however, left much to be desired so we don’t advise keeping anything on top. We ended up having to put up a magnetic fence on top to keep things from falling behind both the washer and dryer.

The Bottom Line

If you’re after the best stackable washer/dryer set, we recommend the LG WM4000HWA 4.5 cu. ft. Ultra Large Capacity Smart wi-fi Enabled Front Load Washer and LG DLEX4000W 7.4 cu. ft. Large Capacity Vented Smart Stackable Electric Dryer. During testing, we found these machines easy to use, efficient, and an excellent value for money.

Our Testing Process

To find the best stackable washer dryer sets, we’ve researched and tested 26 of the most popular models on the market over a testing period of three months, using each machine at least twice a week during this time.

We set the washes and dryers up, noting any difficulties, and paying particular attention to the stacking process, and what tools and extras, like stacking kits, were needed to do so. We tried out all the cycles and settings on each washing and dryer, evaluating them on efficiency and performance.

During testing, we noted how easy each machine was to use, load, and unload, how long each cycle took, how dry/wet the clothes were after each setting, how effectively the clothes were rinsed, how well stains were removed, and noted the quality of the clothes after each wash.

We also took into consideration how noisy each machine was. Where applicable, we tested out any smart features, and noted how easy the machines were to pair to the compatible app, and then operate and monitor within the app. Finally we looked at our energy bills to evaluate each machine’s energy and water efficiency.

What to Know About Stackable Washer Dryers Before Shopping

Dimensions

When choosing the best stackable washer/dryer set for your home, dimensions are a key detail to consider. In addition to needing a tall enough ceiling, you’ll also want to ensure that there’s enough room to open the unit’s doors.

“Most consumers opt for stackable machines to save floor space, so it's worth understanding a few of the fundamental differences between a standard washer dryer versus a stackable,” says Brown. “Standard machines tend to be 27, 29, or 30 inches wide, whereas stackable options range between 24 inches for a compact model, and up to 27 inches for the conventional full-size machine.”

Brown also adds that modern machines are roughly three inches deeper than old machines, so if you’re upgrading to newer machines, it’s a good idea to account for both width and depth.

“Also, allow two inches for your pipework to prevent kinking or crushing your water drain pipe,” he says. “This will prevent the drain pump from clearing the drum of water at the end of the cycle.”

It’s also worth noting that 24-inch compact dryers are often available as ventless machines, making them ideal for interior rooms where there is no external ventilation. Choosing either a vented or ventless option according to your space is a critical requirement for moisture control.

“Ventless dryers are a great option if you live in an apartment, as you can be space efficient and not have to worry about external ventilation,” Brown says.

Capacity

Drum capacities for stackable washing machines are usually 4–5 cubic feet, with more compact models providing 2–3 cubic feet of capacity. Stackable dryers tend to have around 7–8 cubic feet of capacity, with compact options offering approximately four cubic feet.

In stackable washer dryers, the dryer will typically have two more cubic feet of capacity than the washer.

“The capacity of the washer and dryer should be able to handle your household's laundry,” says Brown. “No one wants to be doing load after load when a larger drum size could have solved the problem. It’s best not to scrimp on the drum capacity as you might regret it later.”

Number of Wash Cycles

Stackable washing machines are commonly front-loading models, and just like regular front-loaders, these types of washers can have 10-30 wash cycles, and sometimes even more, depending on the model.

Cycles include your regular normal load, quick wash, delicates, heavy-duty, and rinse and spin. Extras, typically featured on more expensive models, will be cycles like permanent press, and even steam and sanitizing options.

Number of Dry Cycles

Dryers can come with any number of cycles, typically between five and 15 settings. Common cycles that you’ll find on most dryers are regular or timed (with preset minutes), heavy (for a full load), quick (for one or two items), and bulky (for comforters and towels).

Some dryers, like the LG DLE3400W Electric Dryer, have an automatic function that senses how moist the clothes are and will stay on accordingly, and even set the appropriate cycle automatically.

You’ll also find settings based on material, like towels, bedding, denim, or delicates. Other cycles include gentle, wrinkle control, sanitizing, and more advanced dryers can offer permanent press, steam, and air fluff, or steam refresh cycles, too.

Other Considerations

A few other considerations to keep in mind when shopping for the best stackable washer/dryer set for your needs include noise level, location of controls, warranty, and how the units are powered.

Noise Level: Some models operate below 50 dB, so they’re great choices for kitchen areas or smaller homes where noise travels. “Opt for a model that offers quieter operation, anything below 60 dB is an acceptable level similar to that of a conversation,” Brown says.

Location of Controls: It may seem obvious but stacking two machines on top of each other places the dryer controls at the top of the stack, which can be up to 75 inches high. “This can make programming your dryer cycle unpracticable for some,” Brown says. “Look out for machines with both control panels located at waist height in the center of the stack.”

Warranty: Don't forget to check the warranty to ensure you are sufficiently covered in case of any issues that may arise. Some companies offer a longer warranty as an add-on that might be worth purchasing for peace of mind.

Gas vs Electric Dryer: The best stackable washer/dryer sets are typically offered as either electric or gas options. While you shop, Brown says it’s more cost-efficient to stick with the technology you already have at home.

Your Questions, Answered

Can any washer and dryer be stacked?

Not all washers and dryers can be stacked, so you’ll want to ensure that the models you’re considering are equipped for it with the help of a stacking hit.

“Some have curved tops or other design features that prevent safe stacking,” says Brown. “Only select models of washers and dryers of the same brand and size can be stacked. Make sure that the washer and dryer you are interested in are compatible with each other and that the stacking is done according to the manufacturer's instructions.”

Do you need to use a stacking kit for installation?

For safety reasons, Patel advises that a stacking kit is necessary for installation. A good stacking kit allows you to safely stack one unit atop the other, and ensure it stays in place. Stacking your washer and dryer without a stacking kit is a major safety hazard. For example the machines’ vibrations when in operation could potentially cause the top unit to fall off.

It’s worth noting that stacking kits are typically sold separately, and will add cost to your purchase.

Can a stackable set be used side-by-side?

Some of the best stackable washer/dryer sets can be unstacked and used side by side if need be. However, this is only convenient if the control panels are located at the top of the machines.

“Some stackable sets have the washer and dryer control panel in the center of the stack, at waist height,” Brown says. “Putting these side by side would mean the dryer control panel would be at floor level, making it impractical.”

Patel also mentions that stackable washers and dryers, and laundry centers, while similar, have vastly different attributes. “Laundry centers cannot be used side by side and often have smaller capacities than stackable units, but can fit into more compact spaces than stacked washers and dryers as well.”

How much can I expect to spend on a stackable washer dryer set?

A stackable washer dryer set can be priced anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000, so can be an investment. Machines priced at the lower end of this spectrum may come with features than some of the more higher-end options, but this doesn’t mean that they won’t be efficient and able to fulfill all your laundry needs.

After testing our best budget set, the LG WM3400CW Washer and DLE3400W Dryer, we still thought it was high-quality and efficient, while also being fairly easy to use.

Are all washers and dryers sold as sets?

Most manufacturers will offer a matching dryer for every washer. While you can, in most instances, put any front-loading washer and dryer model from any brand or line next to each other and call it a set, buying matching machines will not only look nicer, but will likely be easier to operate as these will typically operate in a similar way.

Plus, many washers and dryers are designed to work together, as they may have cycles that compliment one another, and some smart machines may even be able to communicate with each other.
