Classic French Toast Casserole

When it comes to brunch recipes, you can't go wrong with French toast. If you have a large family to feed, though, it can be a hassle to stand over the stove and flip those egg- and milk-soaked sweet slices one by one. Enter this deliciously easy French Toast Casserole recipe. Our Test Kitchen whipped up a classic version with simple custard base, spiced with a hint of cinnamon. To take the flavors up a notch, you can also make one of two delicious variations: Strawberry-Banana or Blueberry stuffed with cream cheese. Ingredients

  • 1 spray , about 1/3 second nonstick cooking spray

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 12 slices texas toast

  • 6 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

  • 2 tbsp sweetened whipped cream

Directions

  1. Coat a 3-qt. rectangular baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a small saucepan combine butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and ½ tsp. cinnamon. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes.

  2. Spread half of the sugar mixture in the prepared dish. Layer 6 bread slices on top. Spread remaining half of sugar mixture on top of bread. Add remaining bread slices.

  3. In a medium bowl whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and remaining ½ tsp. cinnamon. Pour over bread. Cover dish, and chill at least 8 hours or overnight.

  4. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake, uncovered, until a knife inserted into center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Cut into 12 pieces. Serve with Sweetened Whipped Cream.

Blueberry Stuffed French Toast

In a medium bowl beat 6 ounces softened cream cheese with 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Fold in 2 cups blueberries. Prepare sugar mixture as directed in step 1 and pour half of the mixture in the prepared dish. Arrange 6 bread slices in dish and top with remaining sugar mixture and the blueberry filling. Complete recipe as directed. 

Strawberry-Banana Stuffed French Toast

In a medium bowl beat 6 ounces softened cream cheese with ¼ cup strawberry jam with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Fold in ⅔ cup chopped strawberries. Prepare sugar mixture as directed in step 1 and pour half of the mixture in the prepared dish. Arrange 6 bread slices in dish and top with remaining sugar mixture and the strawberry filling. Slice 3 bananas and arrange slices over the strawberry filling. Complete recipe as directed.
