Old-fashioned ham salad is a nostalgic recipe that's made with cooked ham, relish, and mayo. It's a great way to repurpose roast ham leftovers. For many of us, it evokes childhood memories of lunches after Christmas and Easter. It's great served with veggies, crackers, or spread on bread to make a sandwich. It's as easy as tossing ingredients in a food processor. Get our recipe for the best ham salad including tips for storing any leftovers.

Ham Salad Ingredients

Here's a quick look at the ingredients you'll need to make this deli-style ham salad.

  • Ham: This is a great recipe to use up any leftover ham from Easter or Christmas. You can also buy pre-cooked cubed ham in the deli meat and cheese aisle at the grocery store. You'll need 2 1/2 cups total.
  • Veggies: Our Test Kitchen recipe testers liked the texture and flavor that a combination of celery and green onion added. In a pinch, you could substitute an equal amount of finely diced onion or shallot for the green onion.
  • Mayo: Use your favorite mayonnaise for this recipe. It adds the perfect bit of creaminess.
  • Relish: Our testers unanimously preferred the flavor of sweet relish in this ham salad recipe but you could substitute dill relish if you prefer.

How to Make Ham Salad

A food processor makes quick work of making homemade ham salad. In fact, all you need to do to make this deli salad at home is to toss the ingredients in a food processor. Blend until it's finely chopped and creamy. Do not over-blend or it can become paste-like, not good.

How to Store Ham Salad

Store your any leftover ham salad in an airtight container in the fridge for up 4-5 days.

Can You Freeze Ham Salad?

We don't recommend freezing ham salad. The texture can become grainy and the flavors can change during the freezing and thawing process. It's best eaten the same week it's made.

How to Make a Ham Salad Sandwich

This recipe for ham salad will make four sandwiches. Mix up the ham salad and let it chill in the fridge for at least 2-4 hours. Once chilled, spread the salad over bread and top with your favorite sandwich toppings like lettuce, tomato, and onion.
