Though there are many different types of sheets to consider, bamboo sheets are ideal for hot sleepers or those who live in warmer climates. “There is a lot to love about bamboo,” says Saana Baker, a textile expert with 25 years of experience based in San Francisco. “It has a beautiful, soft and silky hand, it’s totally biodegradable, cool to the touch, and it has a nice luster.” To find the best bamboo sheets, we conducted a blind test at our testing lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We used a predetermined methodology to evaluate each set in six categories: colorfastness, quality, breathability, fit, cooling properties, and durability. The final rating was determined by averaging each pick's scores across categories. We also consulted Baker for additional insight. Key Terms to Know OEKO-Tex Standard 100: If a products has this certification, it means it's not made with any substances deemed harmful by OEKO-Tex. Pocket Size: The pocket size on sheets refers to the size of the mattress it'll be able to fit on based on the measurement of the length of a corner seam. Note that if a set of sheets has a deep pocket but your mattress is smaller, the sheets may be loose. What We Tested Quality: After washing the sheets, we put them onto a mattress to determine how well it fit. We also noted any loose or uneven threads, snags, or other imperfections. Texture: We evaluated the texture and weight of the washed sheets and compared it to the feel of the unwashed pillowcase. We then noted if there were any significant differences between them. Breathability: To determine breathability, we placed a drop of water on the sheets and noted how quickly and how much the water dispersed on the sheet. The quicker the drop expands, the more breathable the sheets are. We also laid on the sheets for 10 minutes and noted how cool or warm we felt. Durability: We stained the sheets with coffee, foundation, and oil and tried to remove the stains, noting how well we could clean the sheets. The sheets were also swiped with sandpaper 50 times before we evaluated how well they held up. Value: Value was determined based on what we liked about the sheets, any aspects we would change, and if we thought the price was fair given our overall experience. We also took note of the quality stitching and appreciated that the pillowcase had an extra flap that covered the end. The sheets have a slight luxurious sheen, and they didn't wrinkle as much as other sheets we tested. After lying on the sheets for five minutes, we noted that they were still cool-to-the-touch and breathable, earning them a high score in the breathability category. There’s lots to love about these sheets, which were one of the highest-scoring overall in our lab tests. The fabric is high quality with clean stitching and a uniform color. Plus, there was no color leeching, nor flaws or imperfections. We raved about the texture during testing and were impressed that the sheets maintained their softness and appearance after going through the wash. The fabric held up quite well in durability tests, with no pilling in the abrasion test and no visible signs of the oil or coffee after applying staining agents (though the foundation did leave behind a mark). Equally important, the fabric is cool to the touch and warms just slightly after a few minutes, though we noted that we didn’t feel like we were getting warm or hot from them. The sheets are also quite moisture-wicking and absorb water droplets quickly into the fabric. How It Performed After Six Months After six months of testing these sheets still felt cool-to-touch and we appreciated that they didn't smell like sweat between washes. We used them in warmer weather and thought they felt great to sleep on. We wore a sleep mask and noticed that there was some slight staining on the pillowcase that wouldn't come out in the wash. This fabric is one Baker recommends for long-term durability when shopping for bamboo sheets since bamboo can sometimes be prone to pilling. In testing, these sheets did indeed prove themselves to be very durable and high-quality. We experienced only minor pilling during the abrasion test. After going through the wash, the fabric felt a little softer and silkier, and no imperfections or loose threads were introduced. The fabric also has a nice, cooling quality. After laying on them for 10 minutes, we felt comfortable and noted that the “cool” side of the bed wasn’t much cooler than the side we were on. The fabric performed well in stain tests, too. Although a small mark was left behind, it wasn’t very noticeable, and we thought one more wash with stain remover might have gotten it out. The retailer claims that the fitted sheet is designed to have a universal fit and will work on any mattress measuring 11 to 17 inches deep. We tried it on a mattress with a 9.5-inch depth and noted that the fitted sheet elastic did look a little small, almost as if it wouldn’t fit. However, we were eventually able to get a snug, secure fit on the bed without too much difficulty. As with the Nolah sheets, these bamboo sheets are also a good option for anyone looking for extended mattress sizing: Twin XL, Full, California King, and Split King are all available in addition to the standard Twin, Queen, and King sizes. How It Performed After Six Months Although these sheets are a bit thinner than we'd like, we still thought they were soft and comfortable to sleep on. We didn't notice any significant changes during the testing period and they seemed to be in just as good quality as when we first received them. We loved how cool the fabric is (it’s rayon made from bamboo fiber), and appreciated that the sheets remained so cool even after lying on them for 10 minutes. The quality of these sheets is very good, too. In testing, no flaws were observed in the stitching, the color was uniform and produced no leeching. We felt that the fitted sheet was very easy to get on the mattress, especially compared to other sets we’ve purchased in the past. It fully fit the mattress and stayed in place throughout testing. Unlike some of the bamboo sheets we tested, these Bamboo Bay sheets scored top marks for durability. All of the stains came out of the fabric after going through a wash-and-dry cycle, and while some slight thinning occurred in the abrasion test, there was virtually no difference. The sheets are available in 10 colors, including some basic neutrals (white, ivory, light gray) as well as a selection of brighter colors. The size range is also limited, so they’re not the best bamboo sheets for smaller mattress sizes. Other Bamboo Sheets We Tested Tafts Bamboo Sheets Unfortunately, the Tafts Bamboo Sheets didn’t make a good first impression: As soon as we opened the package, we noted a number of loose threads and “sloppy” stitching. And while most bamboo sheets feel silky and soft, these had quite a different texture and were the roughest bamboo sheets we’ve ever tried.
