She started out there as an editorial intern, working her way up to associate editor of the magazine and associate director of communications for the organization. In addition to contributing stories and editing 6 issues per year for the society's award-winning publication, Viveka also managed the AHS's website, garden book award program, public relations, social media, and webinar program. She also assisted with book content, garden consulting, and fielding plant questions from the public. One of her favorite tasks was snapping plant photos around the society's beautiful 25-acre headquarters at historic River Farm on the banks of the Potomac River.Before her adventures with the American Horticultural Society, Viveka spent 2 years as managing editor of a small lifestyle magazine. In her spare time, she contributed gardening content to various websites and print publications as a freelance writer. Education Viveka majored in horticulture with a minor in English, graduating summa cum laude. She was fortunate to build on her academic studies with hands-on internships at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Iowa State Cooperative Extension Service. After the latter experience, Viveka developed aspirations of becoming a plant disease diagnostician so she completed a graduate degree in plant pathology. Her thesis research allowed her to experience both field work and greenhouse experiments on a common disease of onions.
