This Small-Space Spring Garden Plan Packs in a Ton of Color

You don't need a big yard to create an eye-catching springtime display.

If you think you don't have enough room for a show-stopping bed of blooming plants, think again. All you need is a few feet of ground in a sunny nook or corner of your yard, and you can use this small-space garden plan to create a cheerful display of colorful flowers early in the season. Though the plants in this design, such as violet, creeping phlox, and bearded iris, don't get very big, they make up for their size in the quantity of blooms they produce. Plus, their shades of blue, purple, and pink all complement one another, making a beautiful, impactful combination on a small scale.

Plants for Creating the Small-Space Spring Garden Plan

  • 2 Bearded iris (Iris 'Dusky Challenger'): Zones 3-10
  • 7 Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus): Zones 3-9
  • 5 Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata): Zones 2-8
  • 3 Forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica): Zones 5-9
  • 5 Johnny-jump-up (Viola tricolor): Zones 3-8
  • 7 Violet (Viola labradorica): Zones 3-8

If you aren't able to find the exact cultivars listed above, substitute with others that have similar colors, shapes, and sizes. And because some plants can become overly aggressive and spread out of control in certain climates, always check which species are considered invasive in your area before planting.
